Open Thread: WPH in Louisburg

Feel free to talk about anything or ask any questions that are NC State basketball related.

**UPDATE: Although we were unable to attend Lorenzo Brown's game today, we did have someone up in Louisburg helping us out and keeping us updated.

Brown went off, in what was an intense game, unloading 35 points and around 5 assists. Brown scored from everywhere on the floor, showcased his handles and his quickness, and also threw down a pretty impressive dunk in traffic.

We will be getting the footage from this game as well, so this should be the only place where you can find highlights from all three games. We'll get you all the footage sometime in the coming week.

We were told an NC State assistant coach was in the house, most likely Larry Harris.

WPH, what are your thoughts on Leslie? He seems to be very involved with our other recruits, seems to be a good sign for us.

From what we know, JT's lack of playing time is not due to injury. Wood and Davis are just showing more in practice.

Do you think 2 guard will be the best position for Zo next year?

when can we expect to see some of the recent Luke Cothron footage? He's been putting up some monster numbers..I'm anxious to see some more of his game.

Hargrave is playing Spartansburg Methodist out of SC.

Zo will fit in nice at the 2.

Zo came out with about 10 left in the game because Hargrave was up by around 30. He had 19 points.

CJ Leslie was in the building for the second straight day.

    Jack,
It's hard to get a read on Leslie. If he just simply wants the hype and attention, he's not acting that way. He's hard to get in touch with and rarely allows interviews.

That being said, Leslie is a good kid and is most likely just trying to make sure he knows what he's getting into 100% before he commits (regardless of where that might be).

His actions as of late have to have Pack fans happy. He's been very involved with Coach Lowe and the other 2010 recruits. He's been on campus quite a bit, at Ryan's signing and at Lorenzo's game in Louisburg.

There's not telling where he'll end up but State is definitly going to be right there in the end.

WPH, thanks. So CJs there again today? This definitely is getting me excited. I feel like CJ is trying to make sure that the supporting cast will be there to put him a position to be one and done next year. I think he always wanted to go to State, but he got concerned that he might be on a dud team and get no exposure or constant double teams. I'm sure there are many people around him telling him that. He's played with Harrow and is watching Brown. I think he will see what he needs to see to commit to State.

Is Ryan's brother and law there, too or did CJL come by himself?

CJL isnt any stranger to Brown. They played on the same World Wide Renegade AAU team for the Bob Gibbons TOC two summers ago. At that time CJ was the commit and we were trying to pull in Lorenzo

Well, that tells me a lot WPH. I was thinking that MAYBE CJL came last night to be nice to his coach. But, if he came without Coach that he really did want to see Zo again. I think you are right. I think CJL is going to have a hard time NOT coming to State. I think he wants to and is just looking for excuses to justify the decision.

I don't know if anyone knows what CJ is going to do, including himself but Ryan seems to think he will end up at State by the comments he made at his signing.

I went to The Elite80 Showcase in Wilson about a month ago and seen Ryan and CJ play together. I met Ryan and talked to him for a few minutes after he finished playing. As I started to walk away I turned to Ryan and said oh yeah, Ryan try to get CJ to come to State with you and he said with a smile "don't even worry about it, he's coming."

CJ was also wearing a pair of University of Kentucky UK earrings. Spartanburg Methodist's coach made his entire team stand up at one point in the second half and start chanting "defense...clap clap...defense"

They did stay for the Louisburg game. It was Coach, Deshawn, Zo and CJL sitting together. Really, a suprise to see CJ there for Zo's game.

That's why I'd recommend everybody following this just relax and let it play out. No need to try to figure out what's going on in the head of a 17-yr old kid. Hopefully he'll choose the pack and make all of us ecstatic. But until that happens, we should all relax. Things look pretty good though!

WPH are you going to the Sunday games? Can you please film Spartanburg Methodist's coach for his entire game? The funniest thing I have seen in a while is him making his players be cheerleaders and stand up to chant defense for the entire second half. His coaching/cheerleading tactics would be a youtube sensation

^ Yeah, I know if I was in the position of CJL with multiple employers (Schools) seeking my services I would do my damnedest to make sure that I get the best deal for my time spent there.

Right now, State is a tough sell to CJL when the blues are knocking on his door. It's going to take some warlock magic for Sidney to outsell Calipari. I honestly don't think it matters where he goes as he'll be drafted on potential alone.

OMG! He was probably on his visit to Kentucky... went to the gift shop and thought... those are cool, I'll buy em as a souvenir. Would it surprise you if he bought a Kentucky shirt as well? Not saying he did but it all seems pretty silly to worry about at this point.

Think about how exciting it would be if you were a kid who had the privilege of taking trips to different parts of the state for free! How pumped would you be if people were worshipping the ground you walked on and were begging for your services? It’s like being treated as royalty for some of these cats. He should go on these visits, enjoy his stay, eat out at the restaurants, check out the college town, hang out with the players and yes-take home a couple of souvenirs because you’re only a kid once. Who knows what he’s going to do. I don’t think he even really knows at this point. This has got to be an emotional roller coaster ride and it’s a huge decision for him. The people at Kentucky are probably freaking out as well (the guys wearing UK earrings but then is showing up and Ryan Harrows signing and hanging out with future Pack recruits…WTF! They’re probably saying… come on CJL, don’t play around with us… we can take it… just let us know one way or another.

    OK I’ll stop redfred.

I find this whole "UK earring story" to be a bit suspect. Where would you get such earrings? If my ears were pierced, could i go to the bookstore and get NC State earrings? I've never, ever seen college earrings. Are they common?

Again, i find the "story" a bit suspect. I also find people's attempts to over-analyze a kid's thoughts and intentions a little ridiculous. But that's just me.

Definitely would like to see that type of dribble penetration with the finish or a nice kick out. We haven't had the type of guy who can really get a basket when it's needed since J Hodge. Zo looked really good when they spread the floor and let him go 1 on 1. He's protects the ball and is not afraid of drawing contact and going to the line as well.

    N.C. State Wolfpack Fans,

I want to start off by saying this and getting it out of the way. C.J. Leslie will be attending N.C. State university next year along with his good friend Ryan Harrow. I do not care if he has blue earings, green earings,or a kentucky sweat suit on. He is going to of course accept any type of gift that any person or contact gives him. Who wouldn't ?? NOBODY would be following nc state football,nc state recruits, nc state scrimmages, if he has no intentions of actually playing with these guys. HE will hold off and it will be a drawn out process but he knows that Ryan Harrow and Lorenzo brown will be the best BACKCOURT in the ACC next year ! Why in the hell would he go anywhere else? Starting lineup next year will look like this
    PG-Ryan Harrow
    SG-Lorenzo Brown
    SF-C.J. Leslie
    PF-Tracy Smith
    C- Luke Cothron
    ................
    6th man-Scott Wood
    PG- Javi Gonzalez
    SG/SF- C.J. Williams
    PG- Julius Mays
    PF/C- DeShawn Painter
    PF/C- Richard Howell
    C- Jordan Vandenberg
    PG- Farnold Degand
    SF- Johnny Thomas (academic scholly
    WALK ON HERE

SOLID line-up will compete for acc title. lock for ncaa

Support our guys this year because they are the building block for next year. We will win a couple of games this weekend in the tourney. I am saying 2-1. We show heart and hustle we will be fine. SCOTT WOOD gonna drain them 3's baby!!!! any word on Howell? can he play this week-end?

    Earing:
Where is my man Josh Davis?

  62. Unknown said...
    November 16, 2009 at 9:02 AM

Remove Farnold from your lineup and add J. Davis to make it complete. Not sure about starting 4 true freshman to be an elite ACC team. I don't think Harrow (true frosh) vs. Javi (senior pg with 4 years of playing experience) is a guaranteed start. Lo. Brown over CJ Williams or S. Wood isn't a guaranteed start. And I think least likely to win a starting spot would be Luke over Painter or JV. CJ Leslie would be guaranteed to start b/c he plays a position of need and would add a lot of versatility. Regardless of who starts, all of these freshman will be huge contributors in what looks like a team that can go 12 deep. Talk about really going up-tempo.

I like your confidence about CJL committing. I would like to agree with everyone else that says we should slow down on the CJ talk and stop super analyzing his every move.

I appreciate the scoop on him WPH, and it is nice to hear about his whereabouts. But as fans we should stop obsessing about every detail. At the end of the day, come spring he'll either join the wolfpack family or won't. Won't save us or kill us either way.

  63. Realwolfpacker said...

I love your optimism Earing Man but a team starting 4 freshman (even harrow, brown, cothron & leslie) would have a hard time winning the ACC. Now if any 4 could do it I would bet on our guys....but still that would be one hell of an accomplishment for that young of a team. Either way, I hope both Cothron and Leslie sign in the spring and we never look back.

Coincidentally, the break was started after a Hargrave kid missed the alley oop from LoBro (#0).

I played basketball at Louisburg college a few years ago and let me say this, There arnt too many players at LC good enough to posterize a players from Hargrave.

I have a hard time believing ear ring man or whatever his name is for the above mentioned flaws in his lineup ex degand, 4 freshman starting... BUT I like his confidence.

On the earrings Ill say this,
Theres no reason for anyone to get bent out of shape for wearing apparel that he prob got in lexington while visiting. I know when I visited several colleges before commiting, I got some apparall, some I bought some I was given but either way I wore them. Obviously he likes the school but that shouldnt mean hes secretly playing games to mess with state fans. Hes 17 and every school wants him. You know these young kids gotta be "bling bling"!!!!

PS WPH not much in Louisburg to do when your not watching basketball huh.

PSS Its GOTTA be a good sign he spends most of his weekend with OUR head coach watching OUR future SG...

Let's roll back the clock a little, if we may, about a year ago?

A top ranked recruit from the same school as Mr. CJ Leslie was coming to N.C. State games and hanging around our campus and what not...and we all thought this was amazing, and he would commit to us (By the way, if you haven't figured out who I'm talking about, his name is John Wall). He even came to a game and threw up the Pack sign, at another sitting beside Scott Wood and looked to be enjoying himself. In the end, he commits to Kentucky.

Let's fast forward some, this year, a few weeks ago however. Harrison Barnes was seen on Iowa State's campus wearing an IOWA STATE hoodie a week before his announcement to commit. When it comes for him to commit, he chooses UNC.

The point is...Just because a young man is intelligent and uses the facilities around him to improve his game, and tags along to basketball events because he loves the game, does not mean he will commit to us. It does not even mean we're technically in good shape with them.

To be honest the UK Earring thing is absolutely ridiculous, but humorous.

To wrap up, yes, I do think we're in CJ Leslie's top 2 or 3, with Kentucky and Florida right now. He's always said he would most likely wait until the Spring, as did his mother on zagsblog. In the end though, he could attend every game he wanted and still choose someone else. I do think we're in a better position than we were with JW and Iowa State was with Harrison Barnes mainly because him and Ryan Harrow have played together and him and Luke Cothron play against one another every year, so he knows our incoming class is damn good.

But for the sake of everyone's mental health, try not to analyze what an 18 year old is thinking about.

  68. TruthBKnown Returns said...
    November 16, 2009 at 11:27 AM

Here's the deal. CJL probably got a sweet pair of UK earrings, and other such bling. He's not committed anywhere yet, so he's free to wear them. If he had committed to NC State, he couldn't exactly wear those earrings any more, could he?

In fact, he's probably not committed yet because he wants to get some good mileage from ALL his bling while he still can.

But seriously, he's probably just sitting back and laughing at all this. I think his actions speak pretty loudly, and attending games of our other recruits and commitments, tells me a lot more than the earrings he happens to be wearing.

Just chill everybody. We'll know soon enough. If he comes here, it would be great. If not, it won't be the end of the world (or the program). CJ Leslie won't make or break us. If we get him, great. If not, we'll move on. Just like we did with John Wall.

In the meantime, maybe someone needs to send him some more bling... of the WOLFPACK variety!

Wearing UK jewelry is probably considered pretty cool by most. If the truth be known, committing to UK is probably considered to be pretty cool by lots of people out there also.

BUT, that's for the meek. That's for the type of BB player who feels that his talents aren't good enough in order to make a HUGE impact elsewhere. It's for those types of BB players who have do EXACTLY what everyone is doing because that's EXACTLY what some people around him are telling him to do.

I don't believe that CJ Leslie feels that way about himself. I believe that he feels that he is good enough to STAND OUT anywhere he chooses, that his talent is up there with anyone, and better even. CJ Leslie knows that he is good enough to earn the lasting title of "PROGRAM CHANGER" if he so decides!!!

It's either that CJ, or just another face in a line. You choose CJ.
