Painter Wasting No Time: Narrows List, Sets Date

DeShawn Painter has wasted no time in narrowing his list and setting his decision date, following his visit to Maryland this past weekend. According Maryland's Testudo Times Painter has eliminated Virginia Tech from his list after they picked up Florida transfer forward Allan Cheney last night. This leaves NC State and Maryland as the final two. He also states that he will be making his decision shorty after his graduation on May 17th. Here is an excerpt from the article:

"6 '9 big man DeShawn Painter now lists Maryland and NC State as his finalists. This comes off the heels of Painter's visit to College Park this past weekend where he apparently played pick up at Comcast with some pretty big names. Word is that he really enjoyed the trip and will make a decision shortly after he graduates high school on May 17th."

I really hope Maryland didnt pull the wool over his eyes and mesmerize him with former players playing some pick up ball. Lord knows state could pull out their strings and get some great players in a pick up game if thats what it take. Hopefully he looks past getting wined & dined and thinks about his future in school and on the hardwood... One would think Playing Time would be a big factor and States wide open as far as big men!! Comon Painter Join our top 20 class and push us into the top 10!!! WHP hows the digging on walls situation coming?

Zagsblog has Wall down to UK and Miami:
    http://www.zagsblog.com/2009/05/12/sources-john-wall-down-to-two-fordham-releases-a-3rd-player-recruiting-notes/

My feeling is that the news hasn't changed until an announcement is made. The good news is that UNC and Duke don't seem to be options, at least according to the rumor pools.

I hope both show up, but I love the class we have for '09, and the possibilities for '10 which already includes Mr. Harrow.

^ I agree. Nothing I've seen lately gives State a prayer to land Wall. That ship has sailed. Let's MOVE ON already.

Besides, there's plenty of upside to "not having Wall." Primarily, it'll open the door for Brown and Wood to get more playing time. And their development will be key to State's success over the next 4 years. Their in-game experience will really come in handy when Harrow shows up.

Wall may help more next year, but not having Wall will making 2010 the Pack's year to shine.

I agree with Tim. If you bring in John you stunt the growth of Javi and Mays, If we were to land Wall it would most likely be with the promise "You will have the ball in your hands." No moving him to the 2. And even though we have Ryan coming in, I would hope Javi and Ryan could split time at the 1 with no drop off.

Clifton is pushing for Miami. Obviously Wall likes the connection with Cal. He is going to UK from what I can tell. Talked to a guy at his high school, said the same thing. Don't know how close they are but thats what he thought.

On Painter now, hopefully he comes our way. I'm sure he had fun playing with former players but one advantage for UM is that they have essentially NO frontcourt for next season. There are a few question marks with one player who could be academically ineligible and I believe another player transfered, etc etc. So there is much more playing time at UM. But I still think Painter gelled better with our players. Time will tell.

I just spoke with someone inside and he informed me that the ticket wall receieve may hurt any school in the state of NC. evidently this hurt walls feelings that the raleigh police would "attack" him as i was told so this may be why we havnt heard much in the way of state, duke, or unc (not that they ever had a shot!!). I hope this is wrong but it sure makes sence...

    <- the Anon Great one,
im not sure why we should opologize im pretty sure we all are rooting for the same team. But with that said, Ill be the first to take you to dinner if your prediction comes true for both Painter and wall...

As for Wall hurting Javi and Mays I disagree. They would be comepeting against not only eachother in practice every day, but against the top PG available so this in turn will only help improve eachother. I understand the idea it hurts the other fresh guards (brown, Wood) but both of them play diff postions. Brown will be our SG where wood is told to be ready to compete for the SF which is a big plus to have a SF with his range and handles.... bringing in more talen and competition has NEVER hurt a team

Ask the Detriot Pistons if that's true. Ask The Dallas Cowboys if that's true. Ask the LA Galaxy if that's true.

True...Javi and Mays would get to go against Wall IN PRACTICE, but he would take away GAME experience that is so valuable. Javi grew up before our eyes this year at Carolina, there aren't enough scrimmages in a season that can offer that experience. You can't simulate the Cameron Crazies in practice.

First off- I dont consider John Wall to be the same as or even close to T.O. or packman Jones. Nor do i see him being an Iverson who shoots 30 times a game. so those 2 examples are out. Ask the Celtics how bringing in top talent hurt their team. Ask Unc how bringing several McDonalds plaeyers hurt their team. Each situation is different but to say that big time players and big time talent hurts a team is bogus. lastly i understand some fans want loyalty towards javi because he has improved, and i agree he has, but to take a phrase from good ole TOB, "The BEST players will EARN their job on the field." Bring in the best talent you can find then let them battle it out....

Roscoe was supposed to go to West Virginia last year, grades kept him off campus and he has been at a few prep schools and juco's sense. I don't know how grades affect him this year, wolfpackhoops will have to clue me in on that.

    Pack Leader,

You are warping my argument my man. I never said John was a TO...I never even said he was a bad kid. You said bringing in a talented person has "never" hurt a team. I simply gave you some situations where it did. And you in turn offer situations where top talent helps a team, of course there are many situations where talent helps teams. My point was, and stil is, John Wall would certainly help us next year...but I don't know if he would help us long term.

  40. Unknown said...
    May 12, 2009 at 4:41 PM

For those that dont think taking a one and done kid like Wall or Hickson will help in the long term better take a step back and look at the big picture. Who thinks we land Howell, or Lorenzo without landing JJ. Landing Wall would be huge short term and long term. You don't think that if Wall came here and succeeded and helped the Pack win games that it would not go a long way towards landing Leslie and Daniels. People really need to think about it from a big picture standpoint.

Something I found really weird in that article is that Clifton seemed to say that part of why Miami is in it is because of the city itself. So he's encouraging this kid to go and basically be a celebrity in a city known for partying because it would be fun. That just doesn't sound like good advice to me. I remember when Noah got in trouble down there for drinking and marijuana. If he can handle that, more power to him. I just hope that, if that is his choice, he doesn't end up making a poor decision that effects his life for a long time.

A few notes from the Harnett County WolfPack Club Dinner, Larry Harris and Pete Strickland were there and played in the golf tournament. Strickland spoke briefly about our team and recruiting class. He said that our team next season will be extremely athletic and will play with a lot of energy. He said we took baby steps this past season and next year we will take a big step! Johnny Thomas is finally 100% and they expect big things from him next season. C.J. Williams and Julius Mays are going to make big leaps from freshman year to sophmore year. As far as our recruiting class goes, he said we have five talented players right now and are looking to add one more. Harris spoke mostly about how much he loves coming to the Harnett County WPC Tournament every year. Not going to mention names, but private conversations with the coaches and some of the WPC representatives, indicated Wall will not be coming to State and they expect he will go to Kentucky. They did confirm Painter is down to us and Maryland. If you have any questions let me know and I will try to answer them to the best of my knowledge.

Great inside scoop wolfcamel thats great to hear postive improvement with the young returners we will so desperatly depend on next year. I am really expecting big things out of Johnny Thomas next year ESPECIALLY if he is 100%. I saw him play before his injury in HS and thought he was a huge sleeper with his athletic ablitity. He really reminds me of Gerald Henderson and if he adds a solid jumper he could be the suprise of the year! Any idea how we are doing with the '10 class other than harrow?? I'm not giving up on Wall just yet. I'm not saying anyone's sources are wrong, but how do we know Wall won't change his mind? I mean, he has taken THIS long, who's to say where he will end up. Until we hear it from him directly, no one really knows. His mom could end up changing his mind and keeping him close to home. You just never know.

Having said all that, if Wall comes, he comes. If he doesn't, it will sting a little, but it won't be the worst thing that ever happened to us. With our current recruiting class, we will be just fine. Especially when Harrow arrives in 2010. And who knows, maybe we'll get another guy (in Wall's place) that will be here all four years.

And if we get Painter, maybe that will influence Wall, too. He surely wants to be surrounded by some offensive weapons that he can feed the ball. Maybe a Painter commitment would push Wall toward us, considering his mom wants him to stay close to home.

Hey Anon, what say you about Wall now? Still think he's coming? Just curious.

Are these Rivals stats correct? Is Ryan Harrow a 5-star already? WPH, back this up, please!

Also, I also feel that it isn't a great sign that UMD sources know that Painter is POSSIBLY committing tonight before Raleigh Sources.

Any WPH comments would be appreciated. Thanks. Go State!

I guess it is a pretty short line for congratulations to Great Anon. Hang in there my main. We have all spouted off to be wrong. Brown/Mays/Javi/Farnold can get the ball up court. Next year, we will be very athletic and, hopefully, fun to watch.

I'd feel better if your source was an NC State source.

Usually recruits call the team they aren't committing to first...then call the other coach to say yes, so that the Coach of the other school doesn't find out last. I'm just sayin'...

He's got some people close to him that are on our side. Lets hope thats the deciding factor.

Also I confirmed with an NC State source that decision is supposed to come tonight.

Does NCSU know the decision, do you know?

    Seniors in 2010:
    C T. Smith
    PG J. Gonzalez

    Juniors in 2010:
    PG J. Mays
    SG C.J. Williams
    SF J. Thomas

    Sophomores in 2010:
    SG S. Wood
    SG/SF L. Brown
    SF J. Davis
    PF R. Howell
    PF D. Painter (possible)
    C J. Vandenberg

    Freshmen in 2010: (possible)
    PG R. Harrow (committed)
    PF L. Cuthron
    PF/C C.J. Leslie

Does this picture look close to accurate to you, WPH? Also, if you have time, would you list any other 2010 targets? Thank you. And WOW. Even if Harrow stands alone in the 2010 class (which will never happen) that team will be awesome! I'm proud of Sid, man. He is going to be able to institute a true 'up and down' 'inside out' kind of style starting next year. I'm ready! I'm ready. Go State!

    Ppack,
Looks good. 2010 is the only question. How will the roster shake out? How many ships available? And those questions won't be answered until after this coming season.

2010 Targets- Every site has their "list" but I think you can trim those down a lot. We are only showing "serious" interest in a few guys. I think the real 2010 targets as of now are:

    Cothron, Leslie, Parker, Barton

Now I'm hearing Barton to Kentucky is going to happen unless Larry Harris works some serious magic.

Cothron likes us and really likes Sid. So we'll keep hard after him.

Parker is a new name but is VERY interested in playing here, thanks in part to his new buddy Ryan Harrow.

And leslie is the wild card

    WPH,
Do you have any info on Emanuel Chapman, a local PG from Enloe I think? He was mentioned on another site as a talent and someone interested in State. To your knowledge are we looking at him at all as someone to backup Harrow for the next few years? Scholarship or prefered walkon offer?

I keep checking in for the news!

It would be interesting to see a statistic on what percent of major recruits who are undecided late in the game choose the last school they visited.

Chapman may get a call but I haven't heard anything about him getting serious interest from us.

With Harrow already committed I dont think signing another point guard would be the priority. We have limited ships and some bigger needs than at the guard position.
