Open Thread: WPH in Louisburg

Feel free to talk about anything or ask any questions that are NC State basketball related.

**UPDATE: Although we were unable to attend Lorenzo Brown's game today, we did have someone up in Louisburg helping us out and keeping us updated.

Brown went off, in what was an intense game, unloading 35 points and around 5 assists. Brown scored from everywhere on the floor, showcased his handles and his quickness, and also threw down a pretty impressive dunk in traffic.

We will be getting the footage from this game as well, so this should be the only place where you can find highlights from all three games. We'll get you all the footage sometime in the coming week.

We were told an NC State assistant coach was in the house, most likely Larry Harris.

We don't usually have a midweek open thread, but today there seems to be quite a bit of new news out there that we feel should be discussed.

1.) The Fayetteville Observer is making claims that there is reason to believe Luke Cothron will not be playing in the ACC or any other NCAA school, due to his "overall situation", which seems to be hinting at eligibility concerns. It's a shame that this type of thing would make a public newspaper, seeing as it is way off base (even thought it is ,for the most part, an opinion piece). As of last week, the word was that Luke Cothron was on course to graduate. Talking about grades gets sticky because you have to respect the kid's privacy, but we'll just say this; The coaching staff knows what they are doing. They check these types of things, and they are still recruiting Luke as hard as ever. Take it for what it's worth, but we wanted to just clear this all up before people ran with a erroneous rumor. I can't say for sure whether Luke will end up at NC State, but he will certainly have the option to play college ball next year, if nothing changes.

2.) Recruits at the football game. There have been reports floating around that this weekend's football game against Pitt will be stocked full of big time basketball recruits. We have confirmed those reports that Ryan Harrow, Luke Cothron and Lorenzo Brown will all be on hand to catch the game. We've also heard some whispers that another local big time recruit could be making a visit, but that is not yet confirmed. There will also, possibly, be a few other underclassmen recruits there checking out the game. We'll keep you updated on the situation.

3.) Red Rally at Reynolds. Your thoughts on this event? Personally, I think it's a good idea. The red/white game was always fun, but always seem like a spectacle built around the football game that never really gave the basketball team the publicity it deserved. The next day, all the news was about the football game.

OPEN THREAD: Saturday, September 19

Here is another installment of our basketball off-season weekend open thread. Here we give you the chance to ask questions, voice concerns and just leave comments. So whatever is on your mind, NC State Basketball wise, let's hear it.

Here are a few topics that can get us started:

1) With 2010 recruit Luke Cothron claiming NC State as his leader, what does this mean for the NC State staff? Remember, there is only one scholarship available right now. Cothron is a top 30 player, but so is CJ Leslie, who has been around campus quite often lately and even visiting with Coach Lowe at the Wolfpack football game. Does the staff take the first person to commit? How would you handle this situation?

2) Ryan Harrow apologizes for the way his comments may have come off in his interview with "HighSchoolHoop.com." A testament to the way the kid has been brought up. NC State is surely getting a good one (on and off the court) in Harrow.

3.) ESPN has ranked NC State's 2010 recruiting class (Harrow/Brown) #12 in the nation. UNC is ranked #5 (Marshall/Bullock). This brings up an interesting argument. If you've seen these kids play, let us know if you really think UNC's class is 7 spots better than the Pack's.

Sorry we're a little late today with the open thread. As you can see, we're making it a weekly occurrence to have at least one open thread a week. We'll try to keep it on Sundays, since Sundays are usually the slowest, news wise.

Here are a few things we've been discussing, and now we want to get your take.

-Should NC State kick off the basketball season with a Midnight Madness? Would it be popular enough to draw a big crowd? Should it be held at Reynolds or the RBC? Should the Pack just stick with the Red/White game?

-Is there any, living, former NC State players that you'd like us to cover in our "Where are They Now?" ...We are now taking suggestions.

Feel free to let your questions, comments or concerns be heard. Have at it!

Hey everyone. We'd like to apologize for the lack of articles the past few days. We have been working very hard on the new Wolfpack Hoops website which should be launching sometime before basketball season. It will be complete with forums and and a few new features that should make the interaction aspect of the site a lot easier as well as more aesthetically pleasing. We will also be looking for a few moderators to help us keep the message boards as positive as possible. We certainly do not mind people speaking their opinions and voicing their concerns, but our message board rules will be much like our current rules on comments. We will not tolerate bashing of our players, coaches or University. We've built a pretty good following of people who understand the vision we have and understanding that there is certainly a difference between objectively voicing your opinion (positive or negative) and just flat our bashing the players or the program. Remember that some recruits, current players, and a great deal of former players visit this site and we'd like to keep this as a place for everyone in the Wolfpack family to come and feel welcome.

This week, you can look forward to an a recap of this weekends "Jimmy V" festivities :

- Coach Lowe talks to WolfpackHoops.com about how Coach Valvano impacted him as a person, and his strategy to win the Jimmy V Golf Classic.

- A recap of the "Bowling for Cancer Research" Jimmy V Fundraiser which was held at The Alley on Hillsborough St. (We have the bowling scores from former NC State walk-on Will Roach and Wolfpack great Chris Corchiani, who finished 3rd in the event.

- An article outlining the life of Jim Valvano and the impact he had on the ACC, NC State and current head Coach Sidney Lowe

We will also have a few new interviews with some Wolfpack recruits. Some of which are new on the Wolfpack radar. We also are working on editing some 2010 recruit Bo Ingram footage, and have an update on his status.

Be ready for an information packed week on Wolfpack Hoops, and keep checking back for the most up to date recruiting and team news that we can provide.

That being said, we'd like to open up some conversation with our weekend open thread and give you a chance to ask questions, voice some opinions or give us some suggestions.

Have at it!

Here is your chance to ask us anything that might be on your mind, as well as discuss a topic we might not have covered. Remember to keep everything objective, and no bashing anyone. You guys know the drill.

Here's a few things that have been on our mind:

-The N&O recently ran an article about how "Being an alum of a school can give coaches an edge." It's a good read and brings up a good point, however we were over here having the discussion about how risky it can be for an alum to take over as head coach. There are certainly 2 sides to this one, so what do you think?

- What can we do better? We are always looking to improve and to meet all your NC State Basketball needs, so let us know if there is anything you'd like to see us do, or do better.

- Baseball. I know, I know, this is a basketball site. However, we wanted to gage interest in the NC State Baseball program. I am a huge baseball fan and grew up playing/watching it. We wanted to know how many people would actually be interested if we took on a site covering the NC State Baseball Team. Would it be something that everyone keeps up with or there simply not a big enough market for that?

Have at it.

Here is your chance to talk about whatever you like. What are your predictions for the upcoming season? Who do you think will lead the team in scoring? Rebounding? Assists? Who do you think will be the team MVP? Who will be the most improved player? What will be our strengths/weaknesses? What do you think the starting line-up will look like? I think I gave you enough to chew on. Have at it!

I'm down at the beach on vacation and I'm sitting here under an umbrella brainstorming on a good topic for an Open Thread. I thought this would stir up some good conversation. When you look back on the history of our basketball program, who makes the All-NC State 1st Team? Second Team? Third Team? Honorable Mention?

OPEN THREAD: Pangos Trip

Sorry for the lack of updates, it's just that booking a flight, a hotel and a rental car for a good price is quite the task this late in the game. However everything is set and we'll be flying out at 5:45am tomorrow morning. We wanted to open this thread up to ideas and requests for our coverage in Cali. You can expect the usual, with lots of video, game by game updates and evaluation, as well as interviews with the Pack targets.

Is there anything else that you'd like to see us do while we're out there. You guys made this trip possible so we want to tailor our coverage accordingly. We only have so much time and so much money, so I can't guarantee we'll be able to do every idea thrown at us, but we just want to see what it is YOU want!

PS. We've been getting a lot of requests for "full games" on video, but unfortunately that is something we are unable to provide. When we film games we film it in clips to save tape and to keep the editing easy. It's this method that enables us to get the video out so quickly after games. Sorry about that,  but maybe in the future if we grow we'll think about offering that as well.

We think that the Open Thread worked out pretty well yesterday.  There were a couple of topics that came up yesterday that didn't really take off, that I think are worthy of good discussion.  For instance:

1.)Pack Leader said:
"Maybe this is just me but i would LOVE to see state re-do their jerseys and get a new look. Sidney told me a few years ago when i worked at a golf shop he frequently visited state was in talks about changing sponsorships from adidas to nike but i havnt heard any new updates. I would love to see a new black and red jersey (similar to FSU's new jerseys last year) and then a retro- old school look with the plain block STATE on the front and no names on the back. I really thing that would atleast give us a fresh look. ideas? likes? dislikes??"

2.)J. Sol brought up the possibility of playing more games at Reynolds.  Whether we end up playing more games in Reynolds or not, what is it about playing games in Reynolds that you like?

3.) Priya Rai asked for peoples projections for the Pack over the next couple of seasons.  Let's hear what you think.

4.)Someone else asked about the walk-on situation yesterday and we will help address that.

5.)Luke Cothron will not be playing this weekend. He will be resting up for the Pangos next weekend in Long Beach, CA.

If you would like to discuss something besides the topics above, feel free.  Keep things objective and rational.  Let's have a good day on the Open Thread.

We will periodically post an "Open Thread" that will act as a substitute forum since we are unable to host forums at the current time. In the future we will launch a site that will include forums, but these will be strictly moderated to filter out all of the negative banter that typically floods message boards. Until then, these "Open Thread's" will have to suffice. Whenever we post these we might give you a few thoughts to trigger conversation, but you are free to discuss any topic that you would like that relates to NC State Basketball. Ladies and Gentlemen, we are proud to introduce Wolfpack Hoops first "Open Thread"

Feel free to ask any questions or bring up any topics. Have at it!
