Happy Birthday Scott Wood!

We here at Wolfpack Hoops would like to wish Scott Wood a Happy Birthday today. Scott and the rest of his family are frequent visitors here, and I'm sure it would mean a lot if all of you wished Scott a Happy Birthday as well. Scott will be arriving on campus next Sunday along with a majority of the other members of the '09 class. Happy Birthday Scott!

Scott Wood Injured, Not Severe

There has been a lot of questions asked about Scott Wood's apparent exit from the Indiana/Kentucky All-Star game this past weekend. Well, we're here to bring you the news right from Scott himself. According to Wood, he twisted his knee in that game and was forced to leave. While Scott assured us that he "felt fine" and is walking around, he still has a slight limp. The doctor that examined Wood told him that he did not tear any major ligaments, nor did he do any serious damage to his knee. What may have happened, according to the doctor, is that there may be some strained or slightly torn small ligaments or cartilage. So what does this mean? "They told me that I need to rest it for 3-4 weeks. The worst case scenario would be that I have to get arthroscopic surgery. Even then I'll only be out (of basketball activities) for about 3 to 4 weeks." Said Wood.

Scott was planning on resting up these next two weeks before heading to NC State on the 28th to join the team and to enroll in summer school. If the worst case scenario is the one he faces, he'll only miss 2 weeks of time with the team in Raleigh. If in fact Scott does need arthroscopic surgery, he'll come to Raleigh immediately and get all the work done here.

We will have more updates as they are available, and let you know how the MRI turns out when Scott gets it back.

Scott Wood and The Indiana All-Stars Take Down Kentucky All -Stars 78-65

Another All-Star game for 2009 NC State commit, Scott Wood, and another seemingly easy victory. The Indian All-Stars rolled over the Kentucky All-Stars in the Indiana/Kentucky All Star Game 78-65. Scott Wood had 7 points, going 3-9 from the field. If you've been keeping up with Scott, then you'll see that this Indiana All-Star circuit is no joke. These aren't your run of the mill run and gun All-Star games, these are competitive match-ups for pride and bragging rights for who holds the hoop crown in middle America, a place that basketball is king.

Scott won't be competing in this circuit too much longer as next week is when commits will finally head to campus to join the team, get enrolled early in summer school and start their workouts.

Wood and Seniors Rally Past Juniors 105-83 in Indiana Junior/Senior All-Star Game

2009 NC State commit Scott Wood has been very busy these days playing in All-Star game after All-Star game. Last night he competed in the Indiana Junior/Senior game at Benton Central High School where he helped guide the Seniors to a 105-83 victory.

Wood continued his consistent play as he filled up the nets to the tune of 17 points. His stock is rising every day and is getting those in Raleigh a bit anxious for the arrival of the 6'6 sharpshooter. He will be in action again on Thursday where they will be playing the second round of the Junior/Senior All-Star Games. We talked with Wood a little while back and he described his off-season and what he's been doing to get ready for the coming ACC season.

Scott Wood Shines in Hoosiers Reunion All-Star Game

When Scott Wood was offered and committed to NC State this past year, many wondered if Sidney Lowe and company were making the right decision. Wood was barley known on the recruiting circuit and really didn't have many schools knocking at his door. This didn't deter Lowe, who made Scott the first commit of the 2009 class. A move which looks more and more genius every day. As a senior, Scott averaged 24 points per game, led his Marion Giants deep into the playoffs, and was in the running for Indiana's prestigious Mr. Basketball award.

This past weekend Scott added to his list of accomplishments as he was invited to play in the Hoosiers Reunion All-Star Game. Played in the legendary gym from "Hoosiers," people walked out talking about a new underdog. His name is Scott Wood, and in a game littered with high D-1 talent, it was Wood(the 3 star prospect) who grabbed the audience's attention.  We could not track down a box score, but Scott informed us that he dropped 26 points, handed out 9 assists as he led his team to the 27 point victory.

This was on the heels of the Indystar.com asking "Is Scott Wood the one that got away?"
Wood is headed to North Carolina State in the fall. Some might wonder how he would have looked in an Indiana or Purdue uniform. We'll never know. Coaches don't have enough time to spend it worrying about a player that signed elsewhere.

"He's going to be a top-flight player," said North Carolina State assistant Monte Towe. "He's a great shooter, but he'll be more than just a shooter."

It will be interesting - and you can bet people in Marion will be watching - to see how Wood progresses at North Carolina State.

Here is some more Scott Wood video courtesy of his Uncle:

Off-Season Update With Scott Wood

A couple of weeks back someone wrote a comment asking what Scott Wood has been up to in the off-season. I called Scott earlier today and asked him what he has been up to since the season ended and what his plans were before he arrives in Raleigh in late-June.

Scott told me that he has been working out a lot. Coach Towe sent him a workout regimen and he has been hitting the gym 4 days a week along with a lot of jumping rope and running. He also told us that he has 3 All-Star games coming up in the next month as well (The Hickory Husker All-Star Classic, Indiana All-Stars vs. Kentucky All-Stars game and the Indiana All-Stars vs. Indiana Junior All-Stars game).

I told Scott that we all enjoyed the video that we came across on YouTube this past Saturday. Come to find out, apparently Scott's Uncle makes all of the video's of Scott that we have been embedding on the site. Laughingly, he told me that he gave his Uncle a hard time, because he left out his favorite dunk (apparently posterizing someone). Scott said that "A lot of people assume that I’m not very athletic, but I do have a little bit of bounce. I can get pretty high off one foot, but I am still working on getting higher off of two feet."

I asked Scott if the staff had given him any idea which position they were planning on using him at. He said that they would probably use him at the 3 spot, even though he has the capability to play the 1, 2, or 3. This is another incentive for Scott to hit the gym hard this off-season. Scott said that "I believe that I could be a big mismatch problem for defenders if I play the three, but then that can go both ways, so that is why I am working out really hard this off-season."

Wood said that he has been in contact with Jordan Vandenberg, and that he seems like a really nice guy. He also said that he was excited about the possibility of playing with DeShawn Painter, who Wood is familiar with from playing against Painter's Boo Williams team at last years Boo Williams Invitational. He said that Painter plays a "smart game, which is uncommon in a lot of AAU play. It was his basketball IQ that he hurt us with the most."

He also told me that he was excited that Julius Mays was about to come back home, because he is about to wrap up his final exams. He also laughed when he promised me that he would "make sure Julius stayed in good shape."

It was good talking to Scott again, and we will catch up with him again after his All-Star games. Thanks Scott!

Scott Wood's Dunk Fest

So maybe this is the highlight reel that you didn't know existed. Maybe you were expecting a video of Wood launching three's from outer space. My friends, I kid you not, here is a 2:16 long video of nothing but straight Scott Wood throwing down. When you watch this video you will realize that Wood fits in perfect with what Coach Lowe is trying to do. Keep your eyes open, because there are two times that Scott drives and dunks with authority...one of them being on a poor soul. Scott, after watching this video...2009 just got that much more promising. I mean we already knew you could shoot, this just happens to be the icing on the cake. Enjoy!

KEEP IT COMING: 2009 Recruiting Class Gets More National Attention

We already had a pretty decent recap on the Reebok game, featuring 2009 commits Lorenzo Brown and Richard Howell, but if I know NC State fans then I know that there is never too much information to be had. Which is why when we came across this excerpt from NBAdraft.net we felt like it was necessary to pass it on:

G Lorenzo Brown - 6-3, 186 lbs. - Centennial (Ga.) - Signed to N.C. State
Few players looked as comfortable with the ball in their hands as Brown. He's listed as a shooting guard, but I full believe he could take over the reigns as a point guard, and not even just a scoring point. He finished with 13 points and a number of really nice passes, as well as penetrating more often and easier than just about any player in the game. His play down the stretch aided Team Create in keeping things close as much as anyone.

SF Richard Howell - 6-8, 235 - Wheeler HS (Ga.) - Signed to N.C. State
Howell was one of the most impressive players in practice Thursday, showing great hand-eye coordination and the ability to produce in the post. But in the game, he came out flat, scoring just 6 points. I like where he could be, even if he's not there yet. He has the potential to bulk up a little bit and become a very nice post player, or work on his perimeter skills and make a mark as a swingman.

It’s amazing the amount of positive publicity this 2009 class is getting from the national media. It seems like everyday someone else is coming out and giving our commits some serious props. People are starting to take notice that something is going on in Raleigh. They’re starting to see some major names listing NC State. This 2009 class has people talking…Here is what ESPN has to say about the incoming class:

NC STATE
After continually doing an outstanding job on the recruiting trail and putting together top-level classes, NC State has to endure head-to-head competition against two schools who regularly fill their rosters with players from the McDonald's Game. Not that Sidney Lowe is complaining, but such is the plight that drove Herb Sendek to ASU after dealing with the same issues. With a roster chock-full of juniors and seniors, Coach Lowe desired a recruiting class that could keep him competitive in the powerful ACC -- and the Class of 2009 is just what the doctor ordered. Lowe tapped into the never-ending talent pool of the state of Georgia to nab ESPNU 100 prospects G Lorenzo Brown (Roswell, Ga./Centennial) and PF Richard Howell (Marietta, Ga./Wheeler). Brown, although not the quickest point guard, has all the skill and savvy to be a dynamite player for the Wolfpack. He is very good off the dribble and has the overall talent to make an immediate impact -- and possibly start from the moment he steps on campus. Howell can be a nightmare matchup for opponents. He has the strength and bounce to finish around the basket. However, what makes him so difficult to stop is his quickness, which he utilizes to take opponents off the bounce. While Brown and Howell get most of the attention, Lowe might have found one of the top sleepers in the country in 6-6 Scott Wood (Marion, Ind.). Wood is recognized as one of the most prolific shooters in the country. With Brown's penetration ability, Wood should be available for some ideal catch-and-shoot situations.

Yeah, I know. We are excited too.

Scott Wood Update

We've been extremely busy this past weekend trying to cover the Boo Williams Invitational for you that we're now just getting back up to speed with the rest of our program. 2009 Recruit, Scott Wood's bid for Indiana's "Mr. Basketball" may have been skewed due to the fact that he's committed to a school out of State or that his team did not make it as far in the state tournament, whatever the case, Wood finished 5th in the voting. (He was expected to be in the top 3) We are very proud of Scott and excited for him to now focus on moving and succeeding at the next level with the Wolfpack.

A few days ago the Chronicle-Tribune ran a great article on Scott and his time at Marion. Check it out if you get a chance. Here are some pretty good excerpts:

“I’ve slowed down some lately, but for a long while I took 500 shots every day,” the younger Wood said. “It’s said that practice makes perfect and you may not want to believe it — but it’s true.” Many times after basketball practice had ended, Luce returned to the Bill Green Athletic Arena and found Wood alone shooting baskets.
“He’s definitely a product of hard work,” Luce said.

Before you read this next quote we'd like to add that Marion High School is known for it's basketball. It has produced 3 Mr. Basketball award winners, and was attended by both Zack Randolph and Jay Edwards who both went on to play in the NBA.

“He’s definitely one of the best basketball players who have come around here,” Marion coach Joe Luce said of Wood. “He deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with all the greats.”

Pack Commits Shine in All-Star Games

Scott Wood, Richard Howell, and Lorenzo Brown all participated in All-Star games yesterday and as you can guess, all 3 made big impacts in their games.
Wood, who was selected to play in the North/South Indiana All-Star game, represented the North squad and represented them Well. Scott drained 5 of his 6 three pointers in the first half to give him 15 points. Although he did not score after the intermission, that 15 managed to hold as the Norths leading total.

“I felt really good in that first half,” Wood said. “Part of (the struggles) in the second half was that I haven’t been playing as much since the season ended, so I was a bit out of shape. I think it affected me after halftime.
“All-Star games are going to be like this where there are some runs and big plays,” Wood said. “We didn’t win but I had a lot of fun.”

600 miles away, two other NC State commits were showcasing their skills in another All-Star game. Lorenzo Brown and Richard Howell were both participants in the Charm City Challenge All-Star Game in Baltimore. Sir Rich was a monster and banged his way to 17 points and 8 boards and was a dominant inside presence. Right behind him was Lorenzo Brown who sliced and diced his way to 13 points and 5 assists.

It is very encouraging to see our boys performing so well on a big stage, but let's be honest, we're getting used to it with these guys. Whether it be regular season, playoffs, or all-star games, it just seems like these kids step up and stand out. We can't begin to say how excited we are for this 2009 recruiting class to land on campus June 27th.

The quotes in this article came from the Chronicle-Tribune.

Sharing the Wealth: Up...up...and away

Are you starting to get overwhelmed trying to keep up with all the awards our recruits are reeling in? Yeah, we are too, and we're about to inform you about another. Scott Wood has just been awarded the "Chronicle-Tribune 08-09 Boys Player of the Year." Scott was an impressive prospect based on skills alone, but reading the quotes below you can see he isn't laying back and relying on his talent. Check out what Scott had to say about what has helped him become the player he is today.

“This year, I personally tried to become more of a team leader and have that shot at Mr. Basketball,” Wood said. “The team goal was to get back to state, which we didn’t accomplish. But overall, we won the NCC outright and that was big.”

If you've been paying attention you've been seeing this kind of quote quite a bit out of the players Sidney Lowe is recruiting. Leadership is a quality that is almost unteachable, and something that coaches try to recruit. Coach Lowe is making a serious point that his kids possess a mental toughness and leadership quality that this past year's team lacked.

And for those of you who are worried about Scott's skinny frame, check out what he has to say about being physically ready to compete in the ACC.

“My strength, I’m scrawny,” Wood said when asked what he needs to work on. “I think my toughness can make up for some of it, but I know I will be eating a lot of steak and protein shakes.”

Read the article from The Chronicle-Tribune, stocked full of good quotes from Scott and his coach.

Scott Wood: Senior Season Recap and Interview

Scott Wood knows how to win...period. This three-year starter led the Marion Giants to a 21-4 record this season while pacing them with 24.8ppg. Scott definitely left his dent in the Marion record books. His 1,309 points land him at 9th All-Time in the Giant's storied school history. He also finished his career as the school's deadliest free-throw shooter as well as the most prolific three-point threat the school has ever seen.

We have mentioned this in the past and we will reiterate it again, Coach Lowe is bringing in winners, players who understand how to finish games. Scott Wood fits the bill to a tee. He has helped lead Marion to three straight North Central Conference championships, three straight Class 4-A Sectional championships, and three straight appearances in the Regional Championship game (The Giants were Regional Champs in '07 and '08, they lost in the Regional Championship game this season.). They also made it to the State Title game last season only to lose at the buzzer.

Scott's performance this past season didn't go unnoticed by any means. Scott was one of the finalists for the Mr. Basketball award in Indiana, and he was also named to the AP First-Team All-State squad. Here is the rest of the crew joining Wood on the First-Team: Indiana's Mr. Basketball Jordan Hulls (Committed to Indiana, 4-Star recruit, SR, PG), power forward Derek Elston (Committed to Indiana, 4-Star recruit, SR), small forward D.J. Byrd (Committed to Purdue, 3-Star recruit, SR), and power forward sensation DeShaun Thomas (Committed to Ohio State, 5-Star recruit, JR). Being dubbed First-Team All-State in Indiana is an unbelievable accolade. Indiana and High School basketball are attached at the hip, it's historically been a hot bed of top national talent for years.

Scott also will be playing this Sunday at 4pm in the annual Indiana North vs. South All-Star Game where he looks to help carry the North team, seeing that his 24.8 season scoring average is the highest on his team's roster.

We actually got the chance to catch up with Scott last night. We thought that he, better than anyone else, could help us give a recap of this past season and a forecast of his future. One of our goals here at Wolfpack Hoops is to help you learn more about Pack players, not only on the floor, but off as well. Have fun getting to know Mr. Wood a little bit better:

WolfpackHoops: What was it about NC State that compelled you to commit to them?

Wood: One of the big things for me was the fact that Julius was down there. When Coach Towe and Coach Lowe were recruiting Julius I got to see how they carried themselves and how they went about their business and I was really impressed. I also loved the fact that I could go from Indiana, which is a top-notch high school basketball state, to a top-notch college basketball area like Tobacco Road. I was also excited to go from a high school that is rich with history and tradition to a college like NC State that is also rich with history and tradition.

WolfpackHoops: How often do you speak with the Pack coaching staff and what have they been telling you?

Wood: I talk to Coach Towe quite often and I also talk with Coach Lowe once every week or two. They have been really challenging me to work on my leadership skills and they have given me a lot of good advice. It's really awesome to learn leadership from two of the best point guards to ever play college basketball. I've typically been the type of guy that leads by example. This past season, with Julius being gone, I had to grow as a leader. I had to take on more of a vocal role.

WolfpackHoops: What are you looking forward to the most about getting down to NC State?

Wood: When I get down to there I know everyone is going to push me and make me play harder. We have a lot of talent up here in Indiana, but there is no competition like the ACC. More than anything I'm excited because I know I am going to learn and get better.

WolfpackHoops: This past season had to be a stretching season for you due to the fact that you played a majority of the year at the point guard position, which has not been your normal position on the wing. We talked with your Coach a couple weeks back and we discussed how we thought that one day you would look back on this season and realize how much it shaped you as a player. What do you think?

Wood: I think playing point guard this past season is really going to help me a lot in the future. I think at my height (6'6) being able to dribble the ball up the court will make me more diverse. I probably will be playing the 3, or even some at the 2, in the future and being able to put the ball on the floor will be really important.

WolfpackHoops: Is there any player that you have tried to pattern your game after?

Wood: I've actually never tried to mimic or imitate any particular player. However, the other day my dad and I were actually sitting around talking about this exact same thing. My dad and I actually decided that my game is very similar to Ray Allen's and Josh Howard's.

WolfpackHoops: We really want the Wolfpack Nation to get to know Scott beyond the realm of basketball. Tell us Scott, what defines you as a person?

Wood: I would say that I have pretty good character. I enjoy trying to be a good role model for the young kids here at Marion. My family is also very important to me and it has been hard because all of my extended family has moved away from here. I also have a 3.5 GPA and I will be majoring in Civil Engineering at NC State. Actually when I was looking at colleges that was one of the most important things for me. My dad always told me that you are going to want to go to a school that has the major that you are interested in. The fact that NC State is a really strong engineering was really important to me.

WolfpackHoops: If you could give a shout out to the Wolfpack Nation what would you tell them?

Wood: I know that we haven't made the tournament in awhile but Coach Lowe is putting the pieces together and he is bringing in winners. I think there is no need to worry. I believe that Coach Lowe knows what he is doing. I'm going to NC State to win games. I'm going to NC State to win National Championships. I committed to NC State because I want to be a good player on a great team.

Earlier this season someone at ESPN stated that in a couple years people will look back and realize that Scott Wood was the biggest sleeper in the 2009 class. We can't wait to see that prophecy come to fruition. Scott is a tremendous talent and a tremendous young man. We are privileged at NC State to have Scott Wood donning the Red and White. Thanks Scott!

3 Scott Wood Video's From December

I know this game was in December, but we are going to take advantage of every time we come across a video of Scott, or any other recruit for that matter, that we haven't seen before. Marion lost to Lawrence North, a team that flirted with National rankings this season, 58-70, on December 12th. Scott had 33 points in the contest. Scott milked numerous treys from well beyond NBA range and call me crazy but I'm pretty sure he pulled up a few steps across half-court with ease.

Marion beat Howe on December 13th, 74-72, and Scott had 28 points. I love how Scott uses the glass on a regular basis and he seems to have mastered the Isaiah Thomas pull-up jumper in the lane.

This final video is from a victory over Kokomo on December 19th. Marion won 56-34 and Scott had 20 points.

Hope you enjoy!

By the way, we got to catch up with Scott last night and we will be posting the interview later today. It was great getting to know Scott a little bit. He is a young man who is extremely well-spoken and polite. When I asked him if he ever checks the site he told me that he checks it quite frequently along with his mom and dad and extended family. Give Scott a shout out!

Post-Season Accolades For Brown and Wood

This upcoming Monday night, March 23rd, Lorenzo Brown will be honored with the Metro Atlanta Player of the Year award by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The Atlanta Tipoff Club's Naismith Award Banquet will be held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

Each of our other Pack recruits has scooped up 2 invitations to play in post-season All-Star games. It looks like Scott Wood will keep in tune with the others. Marion Head Coach Joe Luce was quoted in the Marion Chronicle-Tribune as saying:

Wood and McCallum ended their Giants careers Saturday evening, but Luce believes both will have at least two more prep games to play in June’s Indiana-Kentucky All-Star series. Wood is an almost certain All-Star, and Luce said McCallum has the credentials to make the team.

“Even though we lost our last game, I think Scott made a case for Mr. Basketball and he will get votes,” Luce said. “Every other leading candidate played their natural position, but Scott Wood did not and made that sacrifice for the betterment of our team.

Check out the rest of the Chronicle-Tribune article that this quote came from.

Marion Loses In Regional Championship Game

It's not easy for any team to win two games in a row, let alone two games in one day. Marion beat Kokomo in a semi-final game yesterday morning 59-56 in a screamer. Marion was losing at halftime, built up a double-digit lead, and almost gave the game away at the end. Scott Wood was big with 24 points. Next up for the Giants was the Regional Championship game versus powerhouse Fort Wayne Snider. Snider came into the title game with only one loss on the season. They left the game with still only one loss on the resume after beating Marion 80-59. Snider also beat Marion earlier this season on February 27th 66-82. Marion fell short of their third straight Regional Championship. Scott Wood had 18 points in the loss. The Marion Giants should still be given a hand for having an unbelievable season at 21-4. Hopefully Wood's performance yesterday caught the attention of some of the people who will be voting for the Mr. Basketball award.

Sharing the Wealth: "Scott Wood Deserves Mr. Basketball Award"

Chuck Landis is a sports writer for the Marion Chronicle-Tribune and he believes that Scott Wood deserves to be Mr. Basketball for the State of Indiana this year. I don't know if you realize how prestigious of an award this is. The last three names to don the title were Tyler Zeller, Eric Gordon, and Greg Oden. Landis is going to give his vote to Wood but fears that Elston or Hulls will bring home the award due to their Indiana college destination. Nothing is set in stone at this point and a strong performance from Scott this weekend might prove his doubters wrong.

Here is the article where we found Landis' quote.

Wildcats and Giants Roll On

Numbers aren't everything...but at the same time they can be impressive. When a team wins the Sectional Championship of the State Playoffs for the 66th time, I begin to instantly think...that team must be a monster. Well Marion is a monster team and they claim they did the deed last night by beating Huntington North 52-36 to add to their already gaudy number of Sectional Championships. In fact, Senior Scott Wood has been a part of the past three consecutive Sectional Titles. The NC State commit had 27 points in the win while inking 12 of 12 free throws. Reminds me of a performance I saw yesterday. Marion also beat Jay County on Friday night 47-32. Wood had an uncharacteristically low scoring effort wit 4 points, but he was extremely strong on defense.

It's been 4 years since Wheeler won the State Championship and they want their title back (Wheeler also took home the title in '02 and '03). After winning the Championship in '05, Norcross has won three straight. Wheeler wanted a piece of Norcross and they took a chunk out of them last night, defeating them 60-44. Richard Howell scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half to help rally his Wildcats to the Final Four. Wheeler (23-7) is playing the way everyone expected them to all year when the W's really matter. They will play Westlake (25-6) on Friday at the Gwinnet Center (Dulluth, GA) at 8:30pm in the Final Four.
