Open Thread: May 21

We will periodically post an "Open Thread" that will act as a substitute forum since we are unable to host forums at the current time. In the future we will launch a site that will include forums, but these will be strictly moderated to filter out all of the negative banter that typically floods message boards. Until then, these "Open Thread's" will have to suffice. Whenever we post these we might give you a few thoughts to trigger conversation, but you are free to discuss any topic that you would like that relates to NC State Basketball. Ladies and Gentlemen, we are proud to introduce Wolfpack Hoops first "Open Thread"

Feel free to ask any questions or bring up any topics. Have at it!

Uh, just for starters, I'd like to say that I'm very pleased with the job that Sidney Lowe and staff have done out on the recruiting trail. I'd also like to say, in my estimation anyway, that he/they have done it on their own without much of a legacy to fall back on.

Though I'm not ready to start saying that I "expect" everything to just fall in place, but am once again excited about Wolfpack BB, and all of these talented kids will impact the future.

The go pack store is in the ridgewood shopping center. I'd take 64 W to the 440 loop. Head towards the airport. Take the Wade avenue exit and head towards downtown. Ridgewood will be on the left not too far from the beltline.

You guys are ultra-responsive, I love it.
I almost wish I could move my previous rant over to this thread! Thanks again WPH's, for everything.
I want to remind everyone that WolfpackPigskin.com needs your readership too. I feel like there are more players (and red-shirts), coaches, etc. on the football side of things. This fact makes for more articles and some very interesting reads. Please, if you haven't, check it out. And if you have, go back and look at the archives. There is already a back-log of great stuff. Go Pack!

I can't post from work on pigskin like I can hoops, but I read it daily. Good stuff. The only problem is that, with football and the greater number of players, it's harder to keep track of everything and focus in on a single topic.

After reading the Fells updates, it seems like he's getting some buzz. Do you guys feel really good about him signing w/ an NBA team? I hope so. I always thought he had the length and athleticism to play in the NBA.

Maybe this is just me but i would LOVE to see state re-do their jerseys and get a new look. Sidney told me a few years ago when i worked at a golf shop he frequently visited state was in talks about changing sponsorships from adidas to nike but i havnt heard any new updates. I would love to see a new black and red jersey (similar to FSU's new jerseys last year) and then a retro- old school look with the plain block STATE on the front and no names on the back. I really thing that would atleast give us a fresh look. ideas? likes? dislikes??

Just wanted to give another shout out for wolfpackpigskin.blogspot.com. There are quite a few great articles. However, I'm not sure why it does not get as many comments as wolfpackhoops. The future is looking bright for book sports but one could argue that its looking brighter for football.

I could see Fells getting picked up as an undrafted free agent and spending a fair amount of time in the d-league to work on his handles. But if he can show commitment on the defensive end with his length, he'll have a place in the NBA. Dhantay Jones is starting in the western conference finals as nothing more than a defensive specialist. Bruce Bowen, Raja Bell... Even as recent as Courtney Lee. In a league dominated by guards, a defensive minded wing player is a valuable asset.

    Bradford,
I think we got the posting problem fixed over at WolfpackPigskin.com. Check it out and let us know.

    Pearljammer,
We have a good relationship with Fells' agent and he's very optimistic about Courtney catching on with an NBA team either by draft or free agent signing. I see Courtney as a more athletic Bruce Bowen type guy, we'll see what happens but I think things are looking good for him to at least get a shot in the NBA.

Stay tuned, I'm almost done working on the "Players to Watch: TOC" article that features schedules and game times.

I have another subject... does anyone have any "inside sources" that know anything about the Lee Fowler situation? I've been holding on to my belief that something was in the works (contract buyout negotiations) and that he would be gone at some point over the summer.

I'm afraid with all this Mary Easley stuff that's going on, that anything that might have been in the making, regarding Lee Fowler, is very likely on the backburners now. I'm guessing anyone that wanted him gone probably have bigger fish to fry right now.

    Any thoughts?

  20. Wolfpack Hoops said...
    May 21, 2009 at 2:12 PM

^ Here is the final word on the Lee Fowler situation. There was a meeting held, however that meeting was about the Women's BBall head coaching job. It had nothing with Lee Fowler's job.

The football program is doing well and TOB seems to be the perfect man for the job. Heck, the N&O has the Pack finishing first in their division this year. Basketball is really starting to show signs of breaking through, especially with the way Coach Lowe is recruiting.

So both of our programs seem to be on the up swing I'm not sure what school in their right mind would go and fire their AD? It doesn't make sense any way you look at it and it would look HORRIBLE for the University.

Now I know there are people that feel passionately about Lee staying or Lee going but this is not the time nor the place to discuss that.

Pack Leader. Ryan and Mychael are NOT playing on the same team this weekend. Ryan is playing with the Celtics and will be at Reynolds on Saturday at noon and at Card Gym(next to Cameron Indoor) on Friday night. Mychael is playing at the Dail Center on Friday night so if you guys want to check him out in Raleigh you can. Parking is going to be a bit difficult at the Dail so best thing might be to park on Campus Decks and Walk. Its not far. Hopefully Ryan and Mychael's teams can make it to Sunday and I hope that Mychael gets a chance to visit the NCSU campus during the down times in the tourney.

  29. TruthBKnown Returns said...
    May 21, 2009 at 4:00 PM

PPack3, you're right. And I'm actually content for now since I do support our current coaches (100%) in football and basketball.

I'm mainly concerned for when the time comes that we're going to do another coaching search. Or if we need to let one go. I've heard that Fowler was not going to fire Amato, and that the powers that be told him either Amato goes or he goes. Only then did he fire Chuck.

I also understand the logic behind keeping him since we're already in turmoil over this Mary Easley thing.

I actually didn't mean to kick off a debate about Fowler. I mainly just wanted to know if anyone knew anything, or had any "sources" on the subject. I was just curious about his status, because I think he's probably safe for now.

WPH, I was kidding about the meeting. I was referring to the time you had asked me on packpride and I told you what the meeting was about. It's good to know my sources are always right. If I post anything and I mention that it came from good sources, it will be 100% true. I just wish others would not say that they have inside info and are absolutely wrong.

Alright, here it is. I know that everyone likes to talk about Fowler and Coaching Staffs. At the end of the day, at Wolfpack Hoops we support Lee Fowler and all of the Coaches and Staff that fall under neath. It's easy for us to sit back and criticize someone when we are not in their shoes. These people are not trying to sabotage our University or our Athletic programs. While I want this to be an open thread, this isn't the site for banter against Fowler and Coaches. As we all know, there are other places for that. Please understand that we appreciate all of your support and we are glad that you feel open to discuss things. We want to be a site that recruits, current players, and past players aren't ashamed to come to. Think about his before you post. Thanks.

WPH do you know if the RBC Center is still going to get the HD video screens this upcoming season? It will be great to see replays in HD, plus it will probably add to the wow factor that the RBC Center already gives to a lot of recruits. It would definitely be another thing that can aid the program in recruiting.

Is there any way we can get more games in Reynolds? I'm sure there's probably some contractual issues with the number of games we have to play in the RBC, but Reynolds has such a great atmosphere, it would be a shame not to use it more, especially since we have such a rich history there. I'd think it would be ideal to have a lot of these early season games in there, especially the games we have during christmas break cause it's just hard to fill up the RBC during those times.

I gotta question for you guys. I'd like everyone to predict a timeline for the programs progression. I'll start:

2009-10: finish in the top half of acc, we might just miss the tourney cuz the acc might be down
2010-11: top 4 in the acc, 2nd round loss in the tourney
2011-12: top 2 in the acc, final four

WPH, I think we can definitely establish some more national tv time by putting 2 games on our schedule. U of Houston and Arizona State! Any chance for either one of those to happen? I would love to go head to head with the Herbivores

  46. Wolfpack Hoops said...
    May 22, 2009 at 11:27 AM

I think out of respect for Coach Sendek we won't be scheduling Az St. anytime soon. While the fans would obviously like it, it would open a can of worms that the University is better off not touching.

Say we win...then it's "Good thing we got rid of Herb, we are much better off now."

    or

say we lose...and it's "See I knew we should've kept Herb, we'd be winning championships by now."

Now thats a bit extreme, but the arguments would be along those lines and it's just really a lose/lose for the University when you look at it like that.

As for Houston... IIRC we played Houston a few years back and Marcus Melvin his a desperation half court 3 to win. It didnt drum up the publicity that many expected, however I think it would be fun to make that an every 2 year type of thing.

  47. Unknown said...
    May 22, 2009 at 1:33 PM

I think we do need a strong out of conference game with a little meaning. That home-and-home with Ohio State a couple years back when Rivers was around was just great. I've never been so pumped about a non-ACC game. Of course, we have to earn it. Our Big 10 - ACC Challenge game this year is Northwestern... A couple solid years could net us a much better game there.

  48. TruthBKnown Returns said...
    May 22, 2009 at 2:02 PM

RE: say we lose...and it's "See I knew we should've kept Herb, we'd be winning championships by now."

I think it also depends on the direction of our program at the time of the game. If we were to play ASU, and they've been to 3-4 straight NCAA appearances, won conference tournaments, etc., AND came to Raleigh and beat us, it would be horrible. But if we were the ones going to NCAA tournaments, getting better and better, and somehow stumbled and lost to ole Herb, it would be easier to take, like a fluke.

But I agree, I don't really care to play them. The local media and opposing fans are bad enough bringing up Herb at every turn. That would just keep it going.

I really want bygones to be bygones, and I wish Herb well (just not to do better than US!) :)
