PANGOS 2009: Day 1: Wolfpack Targets Highlight Reel

Ryan Harrow #7, Mychal Parker #88, Luke Cothron #99, Will Barton #69
In this camp players are split up into 12 teams and each team is given the team name of an ACC School. NC State commit Ryan Harrow and recruit Mychal Parker are both on Team Maryland. Unfortunately, Luke Cothron, who had told us he would be playing with Ryan and Mychal was placed on a different team. Luke arrived late due to transportation difficulties, which may be the reason for the team change. Either way, we will continue to cover all of them throughout the weekend along with some others.

Team Maryland (Harrow/Parker) is probably the most talented team at the camp sporting 3 top 30 players in Ryan, Mychal and 6'4 SG Andre Dawkins, who is committed to Duke and Terrence Jones a 4 star 6'8 PF. Unfortunately as we all know sometimes the most talented team isn't always victorious, and such was the case last night when they ran up against Melvin Tabb (Wake Forest), Ricky Scott (4 star SG), and rising star Pe'Shon Howard of Oak Hill. Team Maryland (Harrow/Parker) cut what was a 10 point lead, to five in the closing seconds as Harrow got hot, but an in and out 3 pointer from Ryan ended their comeback bid.

Ryan Harrrow: as usual played "consistently great" and had the crowd really starting to talk. Ever since he got that fifth star people began to watch him closer and realized what we all have known for quite some time. He is really on the verge of blowing up and we are very excited about it. Ryan ended with 11 points and around 4 assists, which is good considering that you only play about half the game and you are sharing the ball with Andre Dawkins and Terrence Jones, 2 guys that haven't seen a shot they didn't like. What really starting to stand out is Ryan's court vision. Ever since Dave Telep mentioned the need for Ryan to showcase his passing, it seems he's taken it to heart and making sure that everyone in the gym knows he can dish it. Harrow sees holes that don't even appear to be there and threads the needle with precision. Not many players out there can produce at the level this kid produces, but the fact that his production is so
consistent is what makes him really special.

Mychal Parker: Parker really impressed us. He's not flashy or isn't some sort of human highlight reel, but the kid can flat out play. He is the epitome of any all around player. He handles the ball much better than I expected, has a textbook jumper with great arc and rotation, and can finish in the paint. Mychal will need to work on his strength, but with a frame like his there is not much doubt that he will eventually fill out. Mychal finished with 4 points and never really got it going, but again, unless you are out there getting trigger happy, you're not going to put up a great deal of points in this event. Mychal is a team first type guy with a great sense of humor and a very high ceiling.

Luke Cothron: As we mentioned earlier, Luke arrived late and was placed on a different team, but that did not stop him from doing exactly what he does. Luke is an "And 1" machine. This guy is long, physical and relentless under the rim. What stands out the most with Luke is that he really knows his role. He has a nice jumper, but his game is surely more suited for the paint. He is a quiet, respectful kid on and off the court and although he works extremely hard for position on the blocks, he's not very vocal. In an event like this, if you don't ask for the ball, you don't get the ball. Regardless, Luke had around 10 points and a good deal of rebounds. We've seen Luke a lot and think he has the ceiling to be a top 10 kid in class. Working on strength and staying consistently aggressive will be the only 2 things this kid will need to work on. We like him a lot and this he'd surely be a big help to the Pack if he were to pick Raleigh.

Will Barton: Will is a straight up monster talent. There is just no other way to put it. This kid has some serious NBA potential. Although he's thin, he is as athletic as they come and has a juicy stroke from deep. Give him the ball and just let him work. He carries himself a lot like Julius Hodge on the court, but that is where the comparison ends. Our man Jules had no where near the rise of Barton, who is very deserving of that #1 shooting guard ranking he carries. Word around Barton is that he has a Kentucky lean, but he swears he's wide open. We'll catch up with him later and see what he has to say about that. Larry Harris has made contact on Barton and I say do whatever you can to land this kid because a talent like him is extremely rare to find.

I am a UNC fan, and I can't help but notice that Harrow and Parker play well together. Imagine Harrow, Brown, Parker, and Wood as your backcourt. Looks like NC State is going to be nasty in the future. If your fans don't run off Sidney Lowe, then NC State is going to be a consistent top 10 team in the near future. Can't wait for that rivalry to be like it used to. Sid is going to be giving Ol Roy and K fits here soon with the talent he is starting to bring in. You guys should urge the radical NC State fans to be patient with Lowe. Looks like he was a good hire. I bet NC State fans are breathing a sigh of relief that Calipari did not take the job. Kentucky sold its soul to the ultimate envelope pusher. Anyway, I have enjoyed visiting this website. No bashing here like other sites.

Holy smokes that Barton is some aggressive...whew.

Parker has definitely got a nice shooting technique. It is very simple and is probably enabled him some level of consistency at the mid range game. It appears to be a bit more a set shot then a true jumper, but that is very common for taller players on the perimeter.

Very hard indeed to peg him as someone you've seen before- I would really keep an eye on him as a player that the Pack would be served well going after now because of how good he could be rather then out of necessity due to current roster.

Having not really seen Parker play other than the few cips and just reading about him he reminds me a bit of Levi Watkins when he was being recruited. Watkins was about an inch taller, but had a pretty similar game. Again, I haven't really seen enough of Parker to feel confident in that comparison. Parker probably has a little more of a guard's game than Levi though.

How about in the film you put a slide in the beginning with names/numbers. Can't tell the difference between Barton/Cothron. It will also help newer people.

Curious as to why a West Coast Camp gives ACC names to participating teams.

UNC fan, We have been waiting (some, not so patiently) for the Pack to get back into these Rivalries. And, while we aren't there yet, I think everyone here can see the progress that is being made in Raleigh.
In regards to our fans running Lowe off? Sidney Lowe is no Herb Sendek! Nothing against Herb, but he did not separate, in his mind, the lunatic fringe from the other NCSU fans. He, by no fault of his own, was not from NCSU. Sidney Lowe has a love for NC State that few can claim. NC State BOT's will have to carry Sid out of Raleigh kicking and screaming! He is one of us. He knows how important our programs history is to the entire sport of college basketball. A few negative fans, with a forum to voice their opinions, will not drive Lowe off of his post.
His love of his job superceeds NBA job offers (which have presumably already been laid on the table at least once). Hell, doctors have had to tell Sid not to work so hard or his health would suffer. He has had to balance his diet, get on an exercise regimine and force himself to get enough sleep. He looks as good as he has in a long time, and I'll bet he is more productive as a result. As long as Sid is in Raleigh, he doesn't have to give up his new lifestyle, he gets to have a stable home and he gets to work for the University that sits so deeply in his heart.
Also, Lee Fowler and the BOT's are not 'fire-happy' people. That is a credit to them, in my opinion. Others see it as a detriment, but we always hear about the Coach K situation, when he had four years under his belt at Duke. They almost canned him, and if they had they would have taken a run at another coach, started from square one and wouldn't be (more than likely) where they are today. Coaches need time and recruits need consistancy. Fowler understands this, and is still ridiculed by the 'neg's' at every contract extension.
I apologize for the lengthy post, but I felt compelled to comment. I love to see some opinions from objective UNC fans. BTW, UNC has a 'lunatic fringe' too, as does every school. These folks don't represent the majority. If they did, every coach would get one year to succeed, and we surely wouldn't fill any stadium for any sport at any time. All NC State fans want, is to return to the prominence that we have enjoyed, as a program, since we brought big-time college basketball to the great state of North Carolina. The past twenty years have been a dark period. But, it has been a slow progression back to where we want to be, at the top. Sid may, or may not be the Coach that gets us back to national notoriety. But, he is bringing in top flight talent, and he brings a lot to the table, from every aspect of the game. I'll stop there, as everyone is probably tired of reading now. Thanks for the ear. And, Go State!

UNC fan, it will be MUCH MORE FUN for all of us if NC State can finally do it's part in rekindling THE BIGGEST RIVALRY in the ACC. I think Lowe is setting the stage for just that.

ppack3, Great commentary. I'll admit that in the past I've been very hard on Lee Fowler myself. That was because "I" personally had good reason to believe that the BB had stagnated under the previous HC. Right now though, anyone who cannot fathom the past circumstances that have contributed, and the circumstances brought Lowe back to Raleigh to begin with, and anyone who thinks that Sidney Lowe should take his place on the hotseat, well, those are the types of fans who either cannot, or simply refuse to, see anything but a row of black and white stats contained on a game summary sheet.

People can say it's all as simple as the last win or loss in record book, but believe it or not, this is a very complicated scenario that Sidney Lowe stepped into.

While it is time for some true consistency to start showing up on the BB court in Raleigh, the time for accomplishing our long journey back into the upper echelon is only in it's earliest stages.

First footage of the actual games after the warm ups...Ryan takes the pass from out of bounds baseline and shows off his agility and ridiculous change of speed only to throw in a pump fake pass towards deep corner and instead no look a pass to the block.

In one fluid motion, it is very, very rare do you see such a hard fake and pass like that when a player is moving full speed and about to go airborne. I'm not a scout service guru but I do know that when a pg has the ability to distribute the ball that way then he is a true pg.
