According to FIBA, Engin Atsür is on the preliminary roster of the 2009 Turkish Men’s Senior National Basketball Team for Eurobasket 2009. This is the qualifying tourney for the 2010 FIBA World championship, which will be held in Turkey. It is also the same tournament that, in 2006, saw Atsur guide Turkey to a 6th place finish.
This should come as no surprise, as Atsur was playing for Turkish National Teams even before he arrived in Raleigh for his freshman season. This season, Engin's stats have been nowhere to be found, however it is rumored that his heel problem that caused him so much trouble at NC State has resurfaced. We're not sure if he underwent surgery or has been simply rehabbing the heel, but his name on the Turkish National roster tells us that he must be on the mend.
We wish Engin the best, and will try to catch up with him in the near future.

5 Responses to "Atsur Named to Turkish National Team"Atsur is the kind of player that we lacked long before he arrived, and the same type of player that we have been sorely missing in the few years since. He is probably my single favorite player, though Julius Hodge is cetainly up there close as well, from that particular time period.
Just a super smart BB player who knows how the game is supposed to be played. Except for the foot, glad to see Atsur is doing well. He'll do just as well after BB, in whatever he chooses to do then.
A true "floor general". Not a "natural" pg, but i'd like to think that the team would have been much, much better if we coulda kept him around for a few more years (at least until Ryan gets here).
A tough guy too. I think Javi is pretty tough and here's hoping for a breakout year for him.
I have a good feeling about Javi. He showed real signs last year. I gritted my teeth every time he and Big Ben executed the pick and roll and Ben popped out to the 3 pt line, instead of the easy dunk....Grrrrhh!
Engin was a very good all around player who could really stroke that 3. He played on some good Pack teams.
