WOLFPACK LANDS COTHRON!!

Sidney Lowe does it again. Highly touted 2010 PF Luke Cothron informed the NC State staff that he has made his college decision and will be attending NC State in 2010. We reported last week that the 6'9 Cothron had named NC State his leader, however, it was believed that he would wait until November to make his final decision. Apparently Luke didn't need the extra month to think over his decision to commit to the Pack.

"I just was ready to commit. I have a real good bond with Coach Lowe and wanted to go ahead and do it." Cothron told us.

Although the staff was already very confident in their standing with the 4 star big man, there was still concern over the trip to Tennesee that he had scheduled for later in the month. Those concerns are long gone as Luke has already cancelled the visit after he informed Sidney Lowe of his college plans. Cothron joins Ryan Harrow (5 star PG) and Lorenzo Brown (4 star SG) in a class that may very well shape up to be the best in the ACC. So what was it about NC State that sold Luke on running with the Wolfpack?

"It was pretty much Coach Lowe. I felt comfortable and have a great bond with him. Also, the fact that they already have Ryan and Lorenzo coming in helped." he said

Say what you want about Wolfpack head coach Sidney Lowe, but he has shown the ability to land top of the line talent and beat out some pretty big name coaches and programs in the process.

The 6'9 Cothron is a player that was heavily recruited by Alabama, Arkansas, UCONN, Louisville, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Kansas, amongst many others, but felt the most comfortable in Raleigh with Coach Lowe. Luke is the type of player that should be able to step on campus and immediately help the Wolfpack frontcourt. He is tall, long and relentless on the boards. On offense, Cothron has a soft touch, an accurate short range game and is hard to stop with his back to the basket.

This is a huge pick-up for the Lowe and his Wolfpack, who needed to add a top ranked big man in order to complete a class that looks to put NC State back on the map. Harrow, Brown and now Cothron should make them a relevant contender in the ACC for years to come, and the staff may not be done just yet. We are hearing that even with the addition of big Luke, they are still actively recruiting local star CJ Leslie, who has shown an extreme increase in versatility this summer. Leslie is starting to show the ability to dominate from the wing and college coaches are starting to see the option of recruiting him as a small forward instead of a power forward. His recruitment will more than likely continue until the very end, but the talk that the Pack is still working on him is good news for State fans.

Right now however, the attention is on Cothron, and it very well should be. We cannot put into words how important it was for Lowe to land a player of his caliber before the season starts. This sures up the 2010 class and will make a lot of people realize that something special is on the horizon in Raleigh.

Luke has not yet set a signing day but was not closed to the option of signing in November. “I’m not sure. I might sign early but I haven’t made a decision on that yet” Cothron said. Regardless, Sidney Lowe has to be a happy man today knowing the kind of talent that is making it’s way to Raleigh next season.

__________

- Luke made this decision earlier in the week, but wanted to keep it quiet until he was ready. He gave the word this morning to make it public. We will have more on the Cothron commitment later, and will continue to follow him throughout the season with game footage, updates and interviews

- Last we heard, Luke was still planning on heading out to Wilson, NC  this weekend for the Elite 80 at Barton College. Keep checking back here if you're planning on attending as we'll let you know if anyone pulls out last minute. The event starts at 9:30am and is scheduled to have Luke, Ryan, Dez Wells and others in attendance.

Awesome news! Thx WPH for breaking the news to us. Great pick up by Coach Lowe and his staff. Harrow, Brown, and Cothron...All I can say is WOW, looking at the roster for the following year, our team on paper looks scary.

But Dan Wiederer said he was practically on a plane to Europe already?

Don't fret if he doesn't sign in immediately in November, its not uncommon for some players to wait.

I love the attitude of all of Sid's recruits. It seems to be contagious. I truly believe this marks the turning point we've waited so long for.

You can't say anything bad about Lowe's recruiting efforts. Over the past few years Lowe has done what he's needed to to bring the basketball program back to promince recruiting wise. Im looking forward to what this years group and 11' group will do on the court.

Tip of the Hat to you Coach Lowe.

    Go Pack.

Big freakin' news. That's all that has to be said. It's been a tough stretch this past year for Lowe and company, but now it's clear that help is on the way. The talent level will take a big leap in 2010, and what I like the most is the that these recruits all cite Sidney Lowe as the biggest reason for committing.

The Sidney Lowe Hate Train just got derailed... and hopefully for good. You go Sid!!!

This is amazing. I absolutely love the recruiting job, and I love the type of players Sid is getting. Harrow and Lo. Brown are going to be 4 year studs, and I don't forsee Luke being the type of guy jumping into the NBA b/c someone tells him he can be a mid-first rounder.

HOWEVER, we absolutely need a respectable showing this upcoming season and then we will really start soar. Do not underestimate how things can drop off if the 09-10 team is not competitive. I truly believe the failures of last season's team had a huge impact on us losing out on John Wall and then CJ Leslie decommitting.

Basically, the only reason I bring this up, is for everyone to not lost perspective and to actively root on this year's team as they have a huge impact on what is going to happen going forward.

The future is BRIGHT in Raleigh!

And no offense, but I think some of you are getting a little too caught up in the "board-battle". Who cares who knew about it first, it doesn't matter. ppack3,
Looking at the 2010 roster, what stands out is that just about every player should be able to contribute. When have we seen a state team with 12+ guys that can come in and get it done? That is some serious depth, and versatility. What a luxury Sid will have.

Uh, is this the same "anon" that was calling BS on WPH's knowledge involving Cothron's commitment earlier in the week? Pretty sure it is.

Do you guys remember the debacle that was the 2008 season? Hickson, Horner, Costner, McCauley, and some tracy smith all up front. 3 Pgs. Endless 10-man rotations. No chemistry. A player would start one game and then DNP the next.

The pressure is going to be super high on Sid Lowe to be smart with his rotations and strategic coaching decisions. In 2010 he will have Tracy Smith, Richard Howell, Deshawn Painter, AND Cothron who he has all promised playing time to up front (not even accounting for Vandenburg or potentially CJ Leslie). How is that going to work? Personally I feel like you can rotate 3 people for 2 spots effectively. 4 for 2 is too many.

It is going to be a true test of Sidney's coaching ability to not only be able to manage his players and instill chemistry, but also use these guys in a way that maximizes their ability.

One other thing to think about. Sidney is pulling these recruits with NC State being at a very low point. Sid hasn't even made an NCAA tournament before. Can you imagine what he is going to do once we start winning some games and getting more exposure???? WATCHOUT!

Honestly I dont see this rotation being a problem at all for Sid, it actually breaks down quite nicely. Assuming we have 5 bigmen like everyone has proposed, that gives us 2 starters, 2 subs, and one backup.

To be a contender in this league, you MUST have depth. This gives you the opportunity to take on a TOB idea of letting the players determine who starts and plays with the play on the court. If it ends up being Smith,Painter starting the game with Howell,Cothron subbing in the relieve them that is 2 SOLID lineups that can play with anybodys starting frontcourt (with Big V waiting in case of Foul trouble, injurys). The one who earns the spot will get it but others have the opportunity to earn it back in the game and keep an attack mentality throughout the game.

Not to mention Sid could run a big line up like hes been known to do. Imagine Painter Smith Cothron as the starting front court!!!! Thats DANGEROUS.... not to mention Ryan dishing the ball to them.. or Lo Zo slashing to the basket... or Wood from 29ft deeeep...

Winning cures rotation concerns. Look at all the programs that are winning a lot of games. Take a look at their benches. There are some very good players on those benches and yet you don't hear about controversy over PT. We'll get there soon enough.

  35. WolfCamel said...
    October 9, 2009 at 3:00 PM

Playing time shouldn't be a concern if Sidney is able to sub in a second team, much like NBA teams. That's what he was trying to do previous seasons, but the depth wasn't there to do it. You could see a starting line up of Harrow, Brown, Williams, Painter, and Smith. Then sub in Gonzales/Mays, Wood, Howell, Cothron, and Vandenberg. Those would be two formidable lineups and keep fresh legs on the court.

  36. Unknown said...
    October 9, 2009 at 3:24 PM

Well I think 10 deep line-ups work for teams like UNC, Florida and Louisville because they obviously have the talent and depth (which we will too), but also they play a brand of basketball utilizes their depth advantage.

One of the problems of the 2008 team was that we played such a slow-tempo style that no one could get any type of rhythm. You could be on the floor for 5 minutes but not take a shot.

Hopefully the 2-deep lineups that some of you have mentioned will work out for the 2010 team not just because we have depth, but also we change to a philosophy which utilizes it.

  37. Michael G. said...
    October 9, 2009 at 3:43 PM

with this much talent, we could field 2 full teams in 2010. better yet, the practices will become much more competitive. this is great news!

  38. TruthBKnown Returns said...
    October 9, 2009 at 3:44 PM

Bobak, Sidney has said from day one that he wants to run an uptempo offense. We just haven't had the players to do that. Hopefully, now we do. :)

  39. Dof87 said...
    October 9, 2009 at 4:19 PM

I think the 2008 problems arose mostly from lack of solid guard play and the attempt to change the style of play to a new system, one that Hickson was recruited for. The constant rotations were a result, not a cause. 2010 should have neither of those problems. Sid can let them run, play up-tempo, and keep em fresh. We'll be able to score no problem. I just hope the depth leads to some hellacious defense. That will be the differentiator between goodness and greatness.

Gotta keep the recruiting success going and it takes some serious hard work. i've heard it said that nobody recruits more tirelessly than Roy Williams. The article says nc state is still going after him but won't the signing of Luke Cothron take his spot at PF? I'd love for KU to get involved with him. Thanks for answering my questions. Dezmine Wells has confirmed he will be there.

Luke said he'll be there but I've heard that the staff doesn't think there is any point of him going, however, I think he'd like to play with Ryan and get some love from the Pack fans, so there's a good chance you'll see him there.

Rodney Purvis (2013) is slated to be there but we have no confirmation.

kansas fan. with the addition of Cothron we are officially out of scholarships. however, the staff is apparently still recruting CJL as hard as ever and are possibly making up ground. the consensus on most NC State sites is that if CJ wanted to play at State we'd find a way to make room without forcing someone to leave. Anyway, I'm just as happy as anyone that Luke Cothron has chosen THE PACK, and I'm also very encouraged with what this coaching staff is able to accomplish under less than favorable circumstances.

In this case I was asked to not say anything other than what's been said. Again, Im not positive he'll even show, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up.

That being said we can't say enough about all the support you all have shown and we really respect that too which is why we work as hard as we can to get you every once of NC state basketball and football info that's available, and allowed to be public.

We'll post an open thread tomorrow which we will update and announce who all is in the house for the elite 80. If you are a Pack fan in the area you should seriously consider going as there looks to be a pretty awesome line up slated to attend.

Now is a good time to set reasonable expectations for this team (09-10) and build a program we can all be proud of...again.

For the love all things I hope Sid can now implement the type of up and down style he seems to want. I'd like to see something along the lines of the way Mizzou is playing these days, the old style "40 minutes of hell" defense since we have the bodies (with comparable skill sets) to sub in and out.

Exactly. I'm really, really hoping to see a faster pace on the court this season. Not as fast as what may happen when this next class shows up, but faster than previous seasons.

WPH, keep up the good work. Please don't allow any silly "hot seat" posts on here by "anonymous" Tarholes looking to come on here and start trouble.

Also, can we keep in mind that the 10-11 team will be one of the youngest teams in the ACC. Don't get too carried away with predictions. It will be when harrow, brown, and cothron are sophs and juniors that we will be true contenders in the ACC.
