"I just was ready to commit. I have a real good bond with Coach Lowe and wanted to go ahead and do it." Cothron told us.
Although the staff was already very confident in their standing with the 4 star big man, there was still concern over the trip to Tennesee that he had scheduled for later in the month. Those concerns are long gone as Luke has already cancelled the visit after he informed Sidney Lowe of his college plans. Cothron joins Ryan Harrow (5 star PG) and Lorenzo Brown (4 star SG) in a class that may very well shape up to be the best in the ACC. So what was it about NC State that sold Luke on running with the Wolfpack?
"It was pretty much Coach Lowe. I felt comfortable and have a great bond with him. Also, the fact that they already have Ryan and Lorenzo coming in helped." he said
Say what you want about Wolfpack head coach Sidney Lowe, but he has shown the ability to land top of the line talent and beat out some pretty big name coaches and programs in the process.
The 6'9 Cothron is a player that was heavily recruited by Alabama, Arkansas, UCONN, Louisville, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Kansas, amongst many others, but felt the most comfortable in Raleigh with Coach Lowe. Luke is the type of player that should be able to step on campus and immediately help the Wolfpack frontcourt. He is tall, long and relentless on the boards. On offense, Cothron has a soft touch, an accurate short range game and is hard to stop with his back to the basket.
This is a huge pick-up for the Lowe and his Wolfpack, who needed to add a top ranked big man in order to complete a class that looks to put NC State back on the map. Harrow, Brown and now Cothron should make them a relevant contender in the ACC for years to come, and the staff may not be done just yet. We are hearing that even with the addition of big Luke, they are still actively recruiting local star CJ Leslie, who has shown an extreme increase in versatility this summer. Leslie is starting to show the ability to dominate from the wing and college coaches are starting to see the option of recruiting him as a small forward instead of a power forward. His recruitment will more than likely continue until the very end, but the talk that the Pack is still working on him is good news for State fans.
Right now however, the attention is on Cothron, and it very well should be. We cannot put into words how important it was for Lowe to land a player of his caliber before the season starts. This sures up the 2010 class and will make a lot of people realize that something special is on the horizon in Raleigh.
Luke has not yet set a signing day but was not closed to the option of signing in November. “I’m not sure. I might sign early but I haven’t made a decision on that yet” Cothron said. Regardless, Sidney Lowe has to be a happy man today knowing the kind of talent that is making it’s way to Raleigh next season.
__________
- Luke made this decision earlier in the week, but wanted to keep it quiet until he was ready. He gave the word this morning to make it public. We will have more on the Cothron commitment later, and will continue to follow him throughout the season with game footage, updates and interviews
- Last we heard, Luke was still planning on heading out to Wilson, NC this weekend for the Elite 80 at Barton College. Keep checking back here if you're planning on attending as we'll let you know if anyone pulls out last minute. The event starts at 9:30am and is scheduled to have Luke, Ryan, Dez Wells and others in attendance.

Welcome Luke to the Pack Luke!
Great work Sidney. Great reporting WPH.
The PERFECT way to start the day!!!! Welcome aboard Luke, you are about to be a part of something very very special!!!
good scoop wph!!!!
ahhhhhhhH!!!!!!
If he is committed why wouldn't he sign early? I'm assuming just to make sure Lowe is still there?
YESSIR!! That'a boy Luke! Welcome to the greatest show on earth!! Once again, WPH with the breaking news....i love it!
GMONNNAAAA
Chances are that Ryan and Luke sign early. Nothing is set in stone but both have hinted that is the way they're leaning.
Awesome news! Thx WPH for breaking the news to us. Great pick up by Coach Lowe and his staff. Harrow, Brown, and Cothron...All I can say is WOW, looking at the roster for the following year, our team on paper looks scary.
But Dan Wiederer said he was practically on a plane to Europe already?
Don't fret if he doesn't sign in immediately in November, its not uncommon for some players to wait.
I love the attitude of all of Sid's recruits. It seems to be contagious. I truly believe this marks the turning point we've waited so long for.
You can't say anything bad about Lowe's recruiting efforts. Over the past few years Lowe has done what he's needed to to bring the basketball program back to promince recruiting wise. Im looking forward to what this years group and 11' group will do on the court.
Tip of the Hat to you Coach Lowe.
Go Pack.
Excuse me one second....
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big freakin' news. That's all that has to be said. It's been a tough stretch this past year for Lowe and company, but now it's clear that help is on the way. The talent level will take a big leap in 2010, and what I like the most is the that these recruits all cite Sidney Lowe as the biggest reason for committing.
The Sidney Lowe Hate Train just got derailed... and hopefully for good. You go Sid!!!
Just spit out my coffee!!! Fabulous news. Welcome to the Wolfpack, Luke!
Wow! Great news about Luke. As usual, WPH is the first to give us breaking news. You guys are great, keep up the good work. I look forward to your articles everyday.
HUGE NEWS!!! Great job by Sid and company again!! please people can we realize that this guy knows what he is doing!?
On another note. I want to say that I have been skeptical and kinda negative about this site all along but you guys keep the info coming and its usually spot on. Great break on the story this morning WPH and you can now count me as one of your followers.

PS WPH any idea how/if this will play a roll for this weekend?? Everything still a go???
AND pss.... little rant
To those other publications who blatantly disregard what is said on this site almost spitefully holding out hope WPH is wrong so they can be the first ones to "be right", IN YOUR FACE... Stop questioning the relationship WPH has w/ these young men and just give in and start getting your tips from WOLFPACK HOOPS!!!!
WOLFPACK HOOPS, VOICE OF THE FUTURE... GET ON BOARD!!!
WWWOOOOOOOOOOOLLFF
PPAAAAAAAAAAAAACKK!!!!!!
great job, great get in Cothron
Welcome Luke! We are glad that you committed to NC State. Cannot wait to see you donning the Red and White.
This is amazing. I absolutely love the recruiting job, and I love the type of players Sid is getting. Harrow and Lo. Brown are going to be 4 year studs, and I don't forsee Luke being the type of guy jumping into the NBA b/c someone tells him he can be a mid-first rounder.
HOWEVER, we absolutely need a respectable showing this upcoming season and then we will really start soar. Do not underestimate how things can drop off if the 09-10 team is not competitive. I truly believe the failures of last season's team had a huge impact on us losing out on John Wall and then CJ Leslie decommitting.
Basically, the only reason I bring this up, is for everyone to not lost perspective and to actively root on this year's team as they have a huge impact on what is going to happen going forward.
The future is BRIGHT in Raleigh!
Certainly wasn't expecting this, at least not at this time. It's GREAT news!
And no offense, but I think some of you are getting a little too caught up in the "board-battle". Who cares who knew about it first, it doesn't matter. What matters is that Luke committed and that's good for our program. Let's not let our boards get us in trouble for any violations, and just enjoy the great news as it comes!
why doesnt your donation link work anymore?

I've known this since Tuesday! This is awesome that it's finally public! Great news for the Pack. 'wink' to all the Lowe and WPH haters!
AWESOME!!!!!
Welcome to the Pack Nation Luke and family...I can't wait to see you wearing the red and white.
Believable, yet unbelievable!!!!!!
Thanks for heading my call to arms yesterday Luke! I hope that you let those other girls down easy. "It's not you, it's me." That kind of thing. Awesome!

Sorry, I just wanted to see that in writing! They could go big, they could go small. We'll have shooters, shot blockers, rebounders, guys who can run the break and guys that can back you down. Versatility in spades. Athleticism in spades. And, a point guard(s) to run the show!
Congratulations Luke, Sid and all of the Wolfpack Family! It's a good day to back the Pack!
Go State!
What a great day. Welcome to the family Luke. Can't wait to see you in Red & White.
Now just focus on the grades and get it done in the classroom as well big fella.
ppack3,
Looking at the 2010 roster, what stands out is that just about every player should be able to contribute. When have we seen a state team with 12+ guys that can come in and get it done? That is some serious depth, and versatility. What a luxury Sid will have.
Welcome to the Pack! We are looking forward to seeing you in th Red and White!

Uh, is this the same "anon" that was calling BS on WPH's knowledge involving Cothron's commitment earlier in the week? Pretty sure it is.
Yeah anon, let's not give WPH any credit for doing a great job and being in the know, that might make someone else feel bad. Wah!
Do you guys remember the debacle that was the 2008 season? Hickson, Horner, Costner, McCauley, and some tracy smith all up front. 3 Pgs. Endless 10-man rotations. No chemistry. A player would start one game and then DNP the next.
The pressure is going to be super high on Sid Lowe to be smart with his rotations and strategic coaching decisions. In 2010 he will have Tracy Smith, Richard Howell, Deshawn Painter, AND Cothron who he has all promised playing time to up front (not even accounting for Vandenburg or potentially CJ Leslie). How is that going to work? Personally I feel like you can rotate 3 people for 2 spots effectively. 4 for 2 is too many.
It is going to be a true test of Sidney's coaching ability to not only be able to manage his players and instill chemistry, but also use these guys in a way that maximizes their ability.
One other thing to think about. Sidney is pulling these recruits with NC State being at a very low point. Sid hasn't even made an NCAA tournament before. Can you imagine what he is going to do once we start winning some games and getting more exposure???? WATCHOUT!
^no, it's not redfred. i'd wish you wouldn't keep inserting your bitterness onto this site. i said i'm very excited about cothron's commitment. i just don't see the point in constantly talking about the other sites on this board. why not just keep the comments to talking about the team and the players?
Agreed anon. We appreciate the support Red, but this is really about Luke.
Will this effect the Elite 80 tomorrow? Ryan and Luke still playing??
Honestly I dont see this rotation being a problem at all for Sid, it actually breaks down quite nicely. Assuming we have 5 bigmen like everyone has proposed, that gives us 2 starters, 2 subs, and one backup.
To be a contender in this league, you MUST have depth. This gives you the opportunity to take on a TOB idea of letting the players determine who starts and plays with the play on the court. If it ends up being Smith,Painter starting the game with Howell,Cothron subbing in the relieve them that is 2 SOLID lineups that can play with anybodys starting frontcourt (with Big V waiting in case of Foul trouble, injurys). The one who earns the spot will get it but others have the opportunity to earn it back in the game and keep an attack mentality throughout the game.
Not to mention Sid could run a big line up like hes been known to do. Imagine Painter Smith Cothron as the starting front court!!!! Thats DANGEROUS.... not to mention Ryan dishing the ball to them.. or Lo Zo slashing to the basket... or Wood from 29ft deeeep...
but don't get us wrong...we still love ya Red! ; )
^^ as of now, no, but please keep checking back. We don't want to have everyone drive out there and the guys not show.
As of now they will both be there...and Dez Wells has also confirmed. I'm also hearing Rodney Purvis might make an appearance as well.
Winning cures rotation concerns. Look at all the programs that are winning a lot of games. Take a look at their benches. There are some very good players on those benches and yet you don't hear about controversy over PT. We'll get there soon enough.
Playing time shouldn't be a concern if Sidney is able to sub in a second team, much like NBA teams. That's what he was trying to do previous seasons, but the depth wasn't there to do it. You could see a starting line up of Harrow, Brown, Williams, Painter, and Smith. Then sub in Gonzales/Mays, Wood, Howell, Cothron, and Vandenberg. Those would be two formidable lineups and keep fresh legs on the court.
Well I think 10 deep line-ups work for teams like UNC, Florida and Louisville because they obviously have the talent and depth (which we will too), but also they play a brand of basketball utilizes their depth advantage.
One of the problems of the 2008 team was that we played such a slow-tempo style that no one could get any type of rhythm. You could be on the floor for 5 minutes but not take a shot.
Hopefully the 2-deep lineups that some of you have mentioned will work out for the 2010 team not just because we have depth, but also we change to a philosophy which utilizes it.
with this much talent, we could field 2 full teams in 2010. better yet, the practices will become much more competitive. this is great news!
Bobak, Sidney has said from day one that he wants to run an uptempo offense. We just haven't had the players to do that. Hopefully, now we do. :)
I think the 2008 problems arose mostly from lack of solid guard play and the attempt to change the style of play to a new system, one that Hickson was recruited for. The constant rotations were a result, not a cause. 2010 should have neither of those problems. Sid can let them run, play up-tempo, and keep em fresh. We'll be able to score no problem. I just hope the depth leads to some hellacious defense. That will be the differentiator between goodness and greatness.
Kansas fan here, just wanted to say congrats on getting Luke. The kansas staff was after him for a while but I dont know what happened. I've seen him play twice and was really impressed, I like his game a lot. I was hoping thing would fall through and we'd pick him up. oh well.
question, who is this site affiliated with? Is this blog run by scout or rivals guys?
welcome to the site kansas fan. this site is not affiliated with Rivals or Scout. It is an independent and one of the best out there. great work as always WPH. hopefully Brown, Harrow, and Luke sign in November so we can turn most of our attention to 2011 guys. Gotta keep the recruiting success going and it takes some serious hard work. i've heard it said that nobody recruits more tirelessly than Roy Williams. That may or may not be true, but the results are there. I think our guys do their due diligence and it is beginning to pay off in a big way.
Man a Kansas fella giving us props, I like it. This site is neither scout or rivals. By the way atta a boy LUKE. Smart pick to run with the pack. WPH I never questioned u and I never will great work throughout!!! Oh yea cant leave out my boy's Sid/staff, great job Sid and once again I always got ur back fellas. Time to clock in and do some work.
Kansas fan here again,
thanks for being so welcoming. Whats the latest on CJ Leslie. I know he decommitted for you guys but last i heard he was moving on to Kentucky. I've seen video on him and he is an absolute king. The article says nc state is still going after him but won't the signing of Luke Cothron take his spot at PF? I'd love for KU to get involved with him. Thanks for answering my questions. And i wish there was something like this for Jayhawks basketball!
ELITE 80 UPDATE:
Ryan Harrow has confirmed he will be there.
Dezmine Wells has confirmed he will be there.
Luke said he'll be there but I've heard that the staff doesn't think there is any point of him going, however, I think he'd like to play with Ryan and get some love from the Pack fans, so there's a good chance you'll see him there.
Rodney Purvis (2013) is slated to be there but we have no confirmation.
We're also hearing whispers of another big time local recruit making an appearance, but I'd have to see it to believe it
kansas fan. with the addition of Cothron we are officially out of scholarships. however, the staff is apparently still recruting CJL as hard as ever and are possibly making up ground. the consensus on most NC State sites is that if CJ wanted to play at State we'd find a way to make room without forcing someone to leave. Thanks for visiting. It's always good to get an outside perspective, especially one that isn't here just to take shots at you. this site strives to be a positive voice and i think they do a good job of it. it is actually quite refreshing.
Other big-time local prospects...
CJ Leslie
Reggie Bullock
Quincy Miller
Am I on the right track?
WPH, Please tell us who the big time local recruit is.
We've sworn to secrecy, and have said all we were told we could say.
**The Pack is recruiting this player.
FAIR ENOUGH
5 bucks on Q miller ;)
could it be tony warren jr. from riverside high, son of former pack player?
you cant bring that up and not tell us,we are dedicated to this site, thats like putting a gambling addict with a pocketfull of $$$ in a casino and not letting him play.
You're right anon, and WPH as well, sorry about that earlier post. I did type a comment that all about Cothron earlier than that one, but it didn't show up on the thread.
Anyway, I'm just as happy as anyone that Luke Cothron has chosen THE PACK, and I'm also very encouraged with what this coaching staff is able to accomplish under less than favorable circumstances.
Now, if the staff puts these pieces together so that they mesh, and work in true TEAM fashion, then we should see some great things start to unfold on the hardwood in Raleigh once again.
Wonderful news!!!!
Welcome to the Wolfpack family, Mr. Cothron!
Haha sorry guys, but one reason we've been able to make a lot of good contacts is because when we are trusted with information we respect the source and follow their directions. In this case I was asked to not say anything other than what's been said. Again, Im not positive he'll even show, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up.
That being said we can't say enough about all the support you all have shown and we really respect that too which is why we work as hard as we can to get you every once of NC state basketball and football info that's available, and allowed to be public.
We'll post an open thread tomorrow which we will update and announce who all is in the house for the elite 80. If you are a Pack fan in the area you should seriously consider going as there looks to be a pretty awesome line up slated to attend.
... and redfred, no need to apologize. We know how hard you try to keep things positive and we also appreciate you coming to bat for us. You can rant your heart out and we'll just let you know when we think you cross that line ;)
Appreciate that WPH.
But I'm warning you, if the BB team does get on track here shortly, like I'm thinking they will, you just might be busy as hell reprimanding me. :)
Great news. I certainly wish I was closer to NC to see these guys in person. Being about as far away as one can and still in the lower 48, it is difficult at best to watch them on TV. Hopefully, more and more national exposure will come as the team improves in the media eyes.
Go Pack!
Very excited to see Cothron join the Pack! This is going to be a great class.
WPH: Would it be possible to increase the width of the comment section in order to shorten the length? Just a suggestion. Seems like there's a lot of empty space.
Welcome to the pack Luke!!!!!!!!!! I was just wondering where we as a team may ranks in the class of 2010. Working on getting my account set up so I want be anonymous next time.
Another step in the right direction. Coach Lowe and his staff's hard work on the recruiting trail is starting to come together. I can see a time where we start getting more of the top players we may have missed on in the past. Now is a good time to set reasonable expectations for this team (09-10) and build a program we can all be proud of...again.
For the love all things I hope Sid can now implement the type of up and down style he seems to want. I'd like to see something along the lines of the way Mizzou is playing these days, the old style "40 minutes of hell" defense since we have the bodies (with comparable skill sets) to sub in and out.
Exactly. I'm really, really hoping to see a faster pace on the court this season. Not as fast as what may happen when this next class shows up, but faster than previous seasons.
any comments from Brown and Harrow regarding the Cothron commit?
WPH, keep up the good work. Please don't allow any silly "hot seat" posts on here by "anonymous" Tarholes looking to come on here and start trouble.
Also, can we keep in mind that the 10-11 team will be one of the youngest teams in the ACC. Don't get too carried away with predictions. It will be when harrow, brown, and cothron are sophs and juniors that we will be true contenders in the ACC.
Did anyone see Harrow or Cothron at the football game?
^anon,Thats just redfred's way,he likes to hear himself talk he can't help it though.
He talks about other sites because he is banned from most . Best to ignore him.
Great job wph love the site,I can't open donation link help please!
