SIMON SAYS: Issue #4: "I Love Coaching"

What's going on Wolfpack Nation?

Well we didn't play our best basketball (especially me) this weekend to say the least. So all I'm going to say about that is that we're looking forward to redeeming ourselves on Sunday up in Dublin.

Recently I've been in really close contact with my mother, father, and close friends, because like I said before, losing is the number one thing in the world that I hate with a passion.

Changing speeds (haha), I have been concentrating a lot on the coaching aspect of my trip lately. I am coaching two teams over here. The first is an Under 16 all girls club team. I love coaching them so much, because they are so enthusiastic and receptive, and just love playing the game. I feel as if this age group is the most important to young players, because this is the time in which the game tends to get a little more serious. These girls are very talented and I feel that we're going to win a lot of games this season. I'm excited if you can't tell (haha).

The other team I'm coaching is the Varsity team here at the local University. OBVIOUSLY, I am more than elated to be doing this because one day I hope to possibly become a head coach back home in the states, so this is a big task I am taking on here in preparation for my future. This is the best part about this whole experience, in my opinion, because I love the strategy involved in coaching. The evaluation of what your strengths and weaknesses are, pitted against your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. There's nothing like it...

But I'll tell you about it more in detail when the respective seasons begin later this month. I have to run to training, so I'll be in touch. Hope you all have a great week and I'll be speaking to you soon.

Simon

Thanks for keeping us updated Simon! And, thanks for the effort you gave during your career with the Pack. I'm sure you influenced those who were on the bench with you to give it their all. Alot of those same players will be starters this year. So your influence continues with our program. Thank you!

Glad to hear you are coaching. I think you have a lot to offer. If any of your girls can really hoop, be sure to let Coach Harper know ;)

Just found out the only way to get into the game Thurs. is to have a voucher from season tickets or be a student. I planned on going and buying a ticket at the door. So much for that. Just an FYI for anyone else who didn't know.

backdpack thanks for the info. What in the WORLD is the admin trying to do with this little stint?? I think as fans we have all realized we need to be patient with this team which is ALL the more reason to allow ALL fans who want to watch the team in an exhibition!!! If a fan wants to PAY to see the preranked worst team in the ACC play an exhibition WHY NOT LET THEM?!?!! We couldnt come close to filling Reynolds at a FREE Red Rally so why only allow Full Season Ticket holders & Students??? Trying to keep every play secret?? Expecting other teams to come scout the pack???

At this point in the season just make the fans happy!!! Dont turn away paying customers, thats buisness 101.

    Asinine....

^ unfortunately, unless you're a student or a season ticket holder you won't be able to get into the game on Thursday, however, we will be on hand updated you from Reynolds.

Thanks for the updates Simon! I really hope you keep this column going all season long because I look forward to it every week. Best of luck over there and I think we can all agree that you'll be a great coach over there and here, when you decide to come back!

yes, the admin really needs to be called out on this. i went to several exhibition games last season, and they didn't come close to filling up reynold's.

i'd really like to know their thinking behind this decision.

that said, thanks for the update simon, sounds like you are utilizing your time over there. now get a win!

Ive NEVER heard of a school that LIMITS the # of fans allowed to watch an exhibition...

Ofcorse if Syracuse's case I dont think any fans wanted to see that loss.....

Simon, Thanks for keeping the Pack fans in the know. Often, we don't get to hear about the current players enough to really get to know them. It is cool to get your insight, and to get a chance to know what we had in a player like you. Toney Baker is doing similar articles through the Technician, and I love it. I wish we could have more Pack players letting their personalities shine through. Maybe your, and Toney's, projects will have an influence on others and start a trend. Keep up the great work and I'll look forward to your next column.

As for the Exhibition Game...I don't know what they are thinking! Who made this call? I've never even heard of an exclusive, or partially exclusive Exhibition! Not here. I could understand if there was so much demand that it was deemed necessary, but I have a hard time believing that this is the case. I am wondering if there will be any live feeds on-line that we might be able to access? Do you know of any, WPH? There were a few last season, but I can't remember under what circumstances that they took place. I do remember that there was no commentary, and the camera work was awful, but it didn't matter. I got my fix. I hope that they wise up and offer something to a fan that would like to participate. Otherwise, I would be very disappointed in the PTB.

I know I said I wasn't going to post for a while, but I can't help it. First off, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THESE UPDATES from Simon Harris!!! What a great young man with a great perspective on what it actually takes to achieve your ultimate goals!!!

Secondly, I'll even admit that I posted anonymously yeaterday, only a few minutes after I said I was going to lay off for a while. I cannot BELIEVE that this is going to be basically a "closed to the public" outing Thurs night.

W-T-H goes through those people's minds up there???!!!

We understand the frustration, but if this were a money making venture, they'd hold the game in the RBC. The staff likes to play these small opponents in Reynolds b/c it's so small, you still get the loud/exciting feel of a big game and it's better for the team to play in that environment as opposed to the sometimes dead silence that used to come over the RBC during exhibitions.

If thats the case then allow fans to fill up Reynolds if they dont want to use the RBC center. I dont see the reason to turn away interested fans just because you need the "feel of a big game". It will be interesting to see how full Reynolds actually is...

    Allowing more fans = louder

gain, reynold's has never filled up for a b-ball game held there, at least not in the handful of games i've attended over the last few years. i went to too last year that were general admission and there were PLENTY of open seats. no one even sat behind either of the baskets.

not to be negative, but i find this very frustrating. i was all set on coming out and seeing the new team.

^ I completely understand where you are coming from and there is probably a better way to do it, but I believe they feel like they will fill Reynolds for this game. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I'm not siding w/ the admin here, I'm just making sure people don't think they are doing this to spite the fans.

The exhibition games are for the team to get ready for the season, so I do feel like it's more important, if possible, to give these games a big game feel by hosting them in a smaller venue. I do think there should be a way for fans that are not season ticket holders/students to get to see the game (either in person or via an internet feed),

There is NO WAY Reynolds will be full. I would wager that it'll only be about half full. It's an exhibition game on a Thursday night and there are not general admission tickets being sold. Yeah, good luck with that one.

wow, that news about the exhibition game is completely ridiculous. i had planned on going with a group of friends and i was getting all excited about going, but i guess we won't be able to get in now. we were checking online earlier this week and couldn't find any info posted about tickets or how they were handling in it. this just makes no sense to me. i don't see how the admin thought this was a good idea. i'm all for going to reynolds and protesting if anyone else will join me.

I have heard from an insider at Reynolds that tickets will be available at the gate on Thursday. They just didn't want to pre-sell any for some reason. I'm going down there and I'm going to beg, borrow or steal to get in.
