Scout Ranks 2009 Class #13

Scout has updated their rankings of the 2009 recruiting class. The addition of DeShawn Painter on Wednesday night helped give the Pack a boost in the rankings, moving them up to #13. This also ranks us 4th amongst ACC schools, behind UNC, Georgia Tech and Duke. While there are still a few prospects that haven't committed yet, which will shake up these rankings a bit, it is good to see the Pack land in the Top-15 currently. Pack fans should be tremendously proud!

What do they base these rankings on? I mean, Duke is #9, but they only picked up recruits. Yes, two 5-stars giants, but only two guys that are both PFs.\

I'd easily take our #13 over their #9

As good as Kelly and Plumlee are "supposed" to be, I don't see that 2-man class turning out better than our 6-man class. I think Painter and Howell could both be better than those two, and that doesn't even factor in Brown and Wood. Then you've got two other guys, Vandenburg and Davis, both of whom could turn out to be major sleepers. Again, it doesn't surprise me that Duke's class is ranked higher, but I don't agree with it.

So, basically, every other year we attain a top 20 class. It'd be interesting to go back to 2k3 and 2k1 to see what those classes were ranked.
I'm guessing, in order to get over the 'hump' we have to start pulling in top 20 classes every year, like the ugly blues down the street. And then, of course, it's all about how you use your chess pieces, right?

If we can bring in top 20 classes every year.....I like our chances with Sid as our coach. I think now that he has his players to fit the system he wants to run that we are going to see just how good of a coach Sid is. The future looks bright.

I agree, we need top talent every other year.

Now, Coach Lowe has brougth two top 20 classes in 4 chances. However, the first one is I think a little deceiveing due to Hickson's early departure. But we all know how tracy smith has developed. This class looks much better, with at least 4 players that could pan out as smith, a very good ACC player.
Now let's take next class which already has one bona fide star player, and we are looking to add another one, wether it is Cothron, Leslie o Parker. Any of those 3 and we have another top 20 class and a absolutely scary team for the years to come. I am very excited about the future.

Real Deal Anon, any updates on John Wall?

I think Wall is laying low because of that Breaking & Entering thing. Once that has been somewhat forgotten, then he'll probably announce his updated list or his final choice.

The thing is, last year's class wasn't even ranked. Two relatively unknown 3*s.

However, both Mays and Williams really impressed me, and I think they're the kind of guys that will really help the team "gel" in the coming years. If they continue to improve like they did over their freshman season, they're both going to be team leaders and have great careers at state.

I really think Sid has a knack for spotting talent, and spotting hard-workers!

In 2004 class was Brackman, Gavin Grant, and Ced Simmons. Tha class was number 20. The 2003 class was Mike O'Donnelk, Engin Atsur, and Tony Bethel transferring in which was obvisouly not ranked. The 2002 class Cam Bennerman, Adam Simmons, Justin Flatt, and Dom Mejia I don't have the rank for thta one but since they all defected except Cam I don't think they should count. The 2001 Class was Jordan Collins, Julius Hodge, Levi Watkins, Josh Powell, Illian Evtimov, and every ones favorite goal post runner into Devonte Edwards. That class was # 6. I'm hoping this class of 6 produces like 2001.

Sidney was able to take some of the heat off this year by the recruiting class he was able to land and he secured his position for the next 2 years. I really hope we will start playing faster kinda like that 5 game stretch we saw when we were averaging 80+ pts. I think averaging in the 80's would definitely be a step in the right direction of exactly what pack fans would want to see. You don't see too many teams averaging 80+ that have losing records and it'll be more exciting to see than our previous coaches style.

I think part of Sidney's problem is not being able to bring in a large class like this one until now. There are I think FIVE guys gone that were here last year. Sid was able to secure some good recruits, build some momentum, and secure MORE good recruits.

It's probably harder to bring a great player to a program that is so DOWN as we have been, AND you're only bringing in one or two guys.

Sid was able to build momentum and kept reeling them in. Now if we WIN some, then next year's recruiting gets even better (hopefully).

Success breeds success. This new class has the potential to be the turning point that we've been waiting for for the last 20+ years. I don't remember being this excited about State in basketball in a VERY long time!

Wall is coming to N.C. State! I have done told you guys this. He was waiting for Painter thing to go down so he is waiting until graduation and he will commit to NC State and our ranking will jump up to TOP 5 recruiting class.

I wouldn't really count his first year. A lot of commitments left after the coaching change, and he had not time to develop any relationships.

I think CJ Leslie might be the top recruit for 2010 that we are recruiting but I would rather get Cothron or Parker. Yes, I'm holding a grudge because he decommited. Thoughts?

I say lets' get Parker because him and Harrow are good friends and we could use another scorer guard. If we cant land him then I hope we get Cothron I do not want CJ Leslie. I want guys who want to play for NC State not guys have have to bed to come here. He decommited so wish him the best of luck but hope he goes somewhere else. COME TO STATE PARKER

Craigslist, according to Rivals, Cothron and Parker are bigger recruits than Leslie. (#9 and #34 vs. #47.) I'd take Cothron over Leslie in a heartbeat.

    Anon the Great,

I have to give it to you. You are sticking by your prediction. And, I've thought a little about it, and I keep coming to the same conclusions.
If you were just an instigator, there is not much motive, unless sparking conversation gets your rocks off. I mean, no one is losing sleep over your prediction, right? You remind me of the (hypothetical) criminal who has all of this knowledge, and just can't keep his trap shut about it, eventually spelling his own demise. Now, I'm not saying that you are a criminal or will suffer some sort of downfall, it's just the info part that echos.
You could be Sid, you could be Larry Harris or you could be John's mother/friend/brother. But, unless you are John, it is nearly impossible to say, with 100% accuracy, just what he will do. Unless John has taken one or two serious confidants, in which case, you wouldn't be for long if he found out that you were spreading the good word. You're an enigma. A contradiction in terms.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good mystery, especially in the summertime, mostly because I hate baseball and I am usually so amped to get back to the Fall. This has already been an eventful off-season, and it promises to continue.
On the actual Wall situation, I've said it before, I would not fall out from shock if JW signed with the Pack. I believe that even more now that we landed Painter. He wouldn't be the only pony in the stable, so to speak. Sid has a lot to sell at State, and now he has the players to back it up. Wall has suffered through the passing of his father, and is dealing with the illness of his mother's. If he ever wanted to stay close to home, State is the best fit for him. I am not sure if Javi, Farnold and Julius would be quite so happy to see John sign with us, though. That, in itself may cause Farnold (at least) to consider a transfer. All in all, it'll be interesting. I am looking forward to seeing if you are right. But, I have absolutely no stock in it. Good luck (as if you need it).
    Go Pack!

PS - TJ, There are several hundred basketball programs in this country. Unless you are Duke, Kentucky or UNC (for now) you are going to have to talk every recruit into coming to NC State! I don't think anyone has reported Sidney begging anyone, but we don't have top 50 recruits just lining up on Hillsborough St. saying "Pick me! Ooh ooh!" That's not a knock on the program or our coaches, unless you take that as a knock to almost every other coach and school in the country. That's why you recruit, to talk the kids into coming. If Leslie wants to change his mind again, I don't think you will hear any arguments about him committing to NCSU. In fact, you will hear cheering as you pass by campus.

I agree with yall about duke!!! I have seen Ryan Kelly play and he is another undersized PF who wont bang with the big boys down low, nor does he have any low post moves of any type. I realize he can shoot the 3 ball, but duke always gets bigs who can shoot the 3 but their downfall is always no Rebounding or Down low game at all!! This years class will by far surpass whatever Plumlee and Kelly can do for duke!!
Craigslist i agree totally about wanting Cothron over leslie. CJ has yet to play up to his potential and wont play the typical pf postion. we have enough pf we need a true center like cothron who can block/ alter shots but knows his bread and butter is down low. I firmly believe in 3 years we will look back at the top 10 classes and state will be equally as good or surpass them. next years class is lookn top 20 again already with Harrow!!!

ps WPH i FINALLY GOT MY PASSWORD TO WORK!!! NO MORE ANONYMOUS!!!

People, with the Painter commit, all scholarships are allocated. So unless he wants to walk-on and pay his our tuition, John Wall is NOT coming to NC State.

WPH has said all along, that if Wall wanted to come to run with the Pack, Sid and Co. would find a way to make that happen. DGMW, I don't believe that Wall is going to sign with us, but anything is possible. It ain't over until we say it's over! Was it, over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

^^I can promise you that if John wanted to commit to us...the Staff would make room. Don't read into this that I'm saying the staff would kick some on off the team. Not saying that at all. But, there are ways that the staff could make this happen. You have to know that the Staff has prepared for this possibility. They were recruiting Painter and Wall at the same time. If anything, they were probably hoping that getting a 'big' like Painter would lure Wall. Don't know all the details of how the Staff would make it happen, but you can take it to the bank that they would find a way.

My thoughts are that he committed as a freshman, and I don't blame him in the least for de-committing. If I'm a top recruit, and I see Sidney Lowe struggling, the rabid fanbase calling for his head, and three consecutive bottom-three finishes and no NCAA tournament bids, and no real signs of that changing, I'm probably de-committing, too. I don't hold that against him in the least. I think we're still at the top of his list. His freshman year really was too early to commit.

I still think he'll end up in Raleigh.

"People, with the Painter commit, all scholarships are allocated. So unless he wants to walk-on and pay his our tuition, John Wall is NOT coming to NC State."

Trust me, if Wall committed to State, SOMEONE would decide to transfer (probably Degand). The coaches just have to say, "Look, Farnold (or whoever), you're not going to play a single minute. We'll be glad to work with transferring you somewhere you can play." He would probably gladly go.

And there may also be academic scholarships, or some other way to get him in here.

I won't pretend to know how things like this work. But however it is done, they would find a way to get him here. I'm sure of that!

And to the poster that said we don't need another one-and-doner like JJ Hickson this soon, I disagree. But only for this reason: Wall is looking to dish the ball first, and score last, from what I've heard about him. He can be a star and make everyone around him look good in the process. JJ stole the show from the other "stars" and hurt morale in the process. I don't think Wall would be like that for us. I think it would be a one-and-doner that ALL benefited from.
