Open Thread: Saturday, August 8

Here is your chance to ask us anything that might be on your mind, as well as discuss a topic we might not have covered. Remember to keep everything objective, and no bashing anyone. You guys know the drill.

Here's a few things that have been on our mind:

-The N&O recently ran an article about how "Being an alum of a school can give coaches an edge." It's a good read and brings up a good point, however we were over here having the discussion about how risky it can be for an alum to take over as head coach. There are certainly 2 sides to this one, so what do you think?

- What can we do better? We are always looking to improve and to meet all your NC State Basketball needs, so let us know if there is anything you'd like to see us do, or do better.

- Baseball. I know, I know, this is a basketball site. However, we wanted to gage interest in the NC State Baseball program. I am a huge baseball fan and grew up playing/watching it. We wanted to know how many people would actually be interested if we took on a site covering the NC State Baseball Team. Would it be something that everyone keeps up with or there simply not a big enough market for that?

Have at it.

    1) I'd have to say that it is a 2 sided argument. On one hand you have a guy who knows the ins and outs of the program. He knows what to expect. He knows the culture. On the other hand, if you fail and are run out of town, it will look bad for the University and cause some definite bad blood.

2.) I really wish you guys would get forums. Seriously. I love this site but I still frequent places like PP and the wolfpacker because of the forums. It could be some serious one stop shopping here if you guys got message boards. I know that to handle heavy traffic on a forum you'd need extra bandwidth which costs some money, but I'm sure if you asked for a small fee, people would pay. Heck I'm paying 10 a month basically for the forums over at PP.

    3. Now that you mention it, I think a well-done baseball site like WPH and WPP could be beneficial to a lot of fans....but more beneficial to the Baseball program. There isn't a site out there that covers baseball, so really keeping up with the team is impossible. I think i'd be a big hit...and with your credentials and brand name, I think you'd find it well worth your time.

I'd love a baseball site, however, I doubt it would be quite as popular as WPH and WPP. For some reason most people don't care too follow college baseball, which is a shame.

But during the season I'm an avid visitor to NCAA-Baseball.com nearly everyday to check out scores and what not. So I'm sure in season I would be heavily interested. But there doesn't appear to be as much going on in the off season for baseball as there does for basketball. Most players play in a summer league but that's pretty much it.

You gotta have real guts to take over a team after you've played there. I'd say its a huge risk, but huge reward. If you succeed you turn into a legend.

As far as this site goes. I'm a huge fan. This and Pigskin are my only 2 stops for nc state news. the only thing is that I still dont think everyone knows about you. I try to get the word out but I only know so many big time pack fans. You guys need to start a marketing campaign or get something started grassroots with everyone on here involved. You certainly have loads of loyal visitors that would love to help (including me). i second that i want forums. badly.

And about baseball, i'd be into it, but I"m more of a basketball/football guy.

Thanks for the input guys. We certainly are going to implement forums sometime in the future. The only thing is that we'd like to find a way to keep it civilized...like it is on our comment pages. You guys have all been great here, and on WPP and we have some really big things planned for the future of these sites.

Thanks again for the suggestions and comments.

gonna shed anymore light on the Johnny Thomas injury?

^ I'll say what I said yesterday for the sake of a rumor running rampant. Johnny had a small procedure done. Nothing major, and nothing with his knees. He should not miss practices or games. At this time it is looking like it won't be anything to be concerned about.

That is all we will say out of respect for player privacy.

If you are worried about keeping it civilized if you use forums I'm sure you could get a few people aside from you guys to help moderate the forums. Like how they do it at PP and TW.

I think a baseball site would be a great addition. But I don't think theres enough interest. I know everyone says yeah i'd be interested but theres a huge population of guys who would give up a left [etc] for basketball news and football news relating to the Pack. Basically saying there are a lot more hardcore fans for bball and football while baseball has a lot more "casual fans. But this is all IMHO.

Would love a baseball site. Especially want to keep up with where a lot of the former players are in the league, and how our recruiting is going. Can't seem to find any up-to-date info on either of those fronts.

Definitely love the positive side of State sports this site brings. Much better than I've had to deal with the doom and gloom on other sites.

Off topic but im curious, there hasnt been very much if any interviews/news articles/info on to what Javi has been doing all summer. We all know he has to be big for us this year and esp with all the attention Mays has been getting for being a leader I wondering what he has been doing. I heard a rumor he spent his summer in Fla working down there but I have no confirmation about that. Teams can really bond over a summer so I hope he did stay on campus but if he did decide to spend time down there I wonder what/how much he has been working out. WPH yall have all the sources anyway, any light to shed on this topic??

And ps I have a feeling more people would be interested in the baseball site than you might think. Esp if there is good recruiting coverage, nobody really handles that side of the sport...

    ^^ Pack Leader,
Yeah, we were told that Javi was down in Miami for a while, but not the whole summer. We'll have more off-season update Interviews in the future (before the season of course) and hopefully we can catch up with him. We requested an interview with him but he was already down in FL.

I don't have time to read the link about alums as coaches, but I think that an alum/coach walks a fine line where more pressure is definitely involved. You can take a guy from the outside, and he can bring in his own methods and idiosyncrasies, but a coach who was once a student as well as a player, and who is supposedly somewhat familiar with the inner workings of that university, that guy has to tread lightly UNTIL he really starts producing and proving his worth.

It’s hard to believe, but a large number of fans will be much harder on, and show much less patience towards, a coach who is an alumnus of their own university. As a matter of fact, in just looking at the current W-L records as they pertain to NC STATE ONLY, I would say that we have a clear cut case of such a bias occurring within the fan base right now. That bias may turn out to be justified IN THE FUTURE, or it may not. But as for right now, it is not justified at all.

It doesn't look like Lo Brown will be here this year.

The schedule comes out this month and I will try to find more details of exactly when later today.

I heard from a reliable person that there was a less than 10% chance of winning the appeal.

Javi is down in Miami until school starts back up.

And just to let everyone know, we are in the process of designing a website currently...and forums will be in the mix.

and idk how i like javi not being with the team for a while. Hard to earn respect of your teammates like CJ, Julius, and Horner. Not saying he isnt working but ones gotta think bonding is important, esp with a floor leader. THis makes me think its Mays' job to lose....

  25. Wolfpack Hoops said...

Javi was here most of the summer working really hard. Javi is not the only player that has take a trip home to visit family. Others have left at various times of the summer.

Any clue on an interview any time soon/ any idea if he has been playing down there or working with a trainer?

Id really like if u guys had more from the nc state team and a little less of the recruit news. I enjoy reading things such as player interviews and whats going on with the actual 09-10 team and would love if u guys had more of these things. U guys really do a great job with this site and is definitely my go- to site when it comes to ncsu basketball.

^ thanks for the input Andy. During the season we'll have much more news on the team. During the off-season we will be more recruiting based. "Where Are They Now?" will be sprinkled in throughout the entire year.

As you can imagine, it is not easy to give constant news on the team in the off-season. Most practices are closed, and talking to the players is something that has to be scheduled through media relations, but we'll definitely take you request and do all we can to provide you with more team news in the off-season if we possibly can.

  29. Wolfpack Hoops said...
    August 9, 2009 at 2:07 PM

Each game we'll be providing you with a pre-game preview article, photos from the game (most games), Post game press conference video and post game video interviews with the players, along with a post game article.

We're going all out this season, so get ready

    Keep the clips coming

It would be great if the program would let you guys post some highlight clips from practices.

I'm sure it could be done in a way that wouldn't expose too much to the competition and us hardcore fans would love it.

    WPH,

When will you have more of Cam's Black Bleed Red T-shirts available? I need a large, but they aren't available. Also, do they run large or average for a cotton T-shirt? I know sometimes the style is for them to run large.

    Thanks.

Off topic from the ones you had listed.

But another cool thing to do to the site would be an "About the Writer(s)" section.

Tell, us Pack fans, something about yourself and why you decided to start this site. I don't know why, but I always like to know a little about the Sport Writers from the papers and internet.

thanks! love the work/coverage you do!
