Recruiting Update: Cothron, Leslie and Martin Visit the Pack

2010 prospects Luke Cothron, CJ Leslie and a new name on the radar, Derrick Martin, were on hand at Carter-Finley to witness the Wolfpack annihilate Murray State on Saturday. This is certainly big news for Sidney Lowe and the Pack, as they still have one scholarship to fill in 2010.

Both Cothron and Leslie are elite big men with Derrick Martin as a new name on the scene. Martin (2010) is a 6'9 big that will be attending Flora MacDonald with Cothron this season. We are told that he moved to the area from Alabama, where he had been receiving college looks from Mississippi State, Alabama, and Oklahoma State. We had the chance to catch up with Martin yesterday to talk about the visit. "It was good, real good. It was my first time there and I really liked the atmosphere. I really like NC State." Martin told us.

While it is always good to keep your options open, it should be noted that Martin is not currently a target for the Wolfpack. The NC State staff, right now, is honed in on Cothron and Leslie, both of whom would be gigantic signings for Sidney Lowe, who already has a stellar class set to enter in 2010 (Brown, Harrow). While we were unable to catch up with Leslie prior to running this story, we were able to talk to Luke who informed us of the visit yesterday. "I went up to NC State with Derrick Martin, and CJ Leslie. We got to watch the game with Coach Lowe. It was a real good time, and I'm actually trying to see if I can get up next weekend for the game." Cothron told us.

It sure was interesting to hear that both big time prospects were on hand at the same time, especially since there was talk lately that Leslie and Cothron weren't too fond of each other after numerous intense on-court battles. We asked Luke about his relationship with CJ Leslie. "Oh we're cool. I'd say we're cool." said Cothron who also mentioned that they got along fine on the visit. This marks the second time in two weeks that Leslie has been on the NC State campus, fueling the notion that State is still sitting in a good position with the 6'8 forward. According to recent reports, UNC isn't looking like it's going to be extending a committable offer to CJ anytime soon, however Leslie still has in-home visits to come to a decision.

**We've heard that there is a good chance that Flora MacDonald (Cothron, Martin) could open the season against national powerhouse, Oak Hill. We'll confirm when we can.

Maybe this is a strategic plan by Lowe to have the top 3 on his wish list visit at the same time to let each of them know that theres only 1 'ship available and others are interested.... I like the plan...

Either way its always a good thing to have 2 players from the national top 30 list visiting your program. And not for the first time either might I add...

I dont know much on Martin so any insight from fans near Flora MacDonald or WPH insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Ever since his decommitment theres be no secret who I want to add...

Comonnnn Leslie just SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE!!!

Any idea on a decision time frame. I think if Sid has an opportunity to sign both Luke and CJ, he is going to find a way. Johnny is such a bright student, you got to think a academic scholly is a possibility. CJ and Luke working out with each other, pushing each other every day will only make them both better, and add in the silky smooth skills of Mr Harrow and Lo Brown. Wow!!

    ESPN says this about Martin:

"April, 2009: Martin is a long and very athletic player with very good hands. During the Boo Williams Nike Invitational he showed good touch around the basket with the jump hook and consistently knocked downed the 17 foot face up jump shot. He also showed the ability to put the ball to the floor and drive to the basket where he uses his length and athleticism to finish. In transition he does a terrific a job in sprinting out on the floor and with maturation will become a serious threat in the open floor. He competes at a high level and it really shows on the defensive end and in his rebounding efforts. His offense is currently behind his defense but he has the tools. He would be very effective at the mid major level. "

If Cothron and Leslie both wanted to sign, you can be sure that they would both receive schollies.

Martin's not a target/prospect, just came because of Luke.

^ Correct. The staff's focus right now is on Leslie and Cothron. However, Martin is pretty much an unknown right now, but standing at around 6'10 and interested in State, we felt like it was worth noting. I'm pretty sure the staff hasn't seen him play, nor has anybody we've talked to, so he is certainly worth keeping an eye on this season. I've seen plenty of late bloomers emerge in their senior season, so this was just to throw out there for something to keep your eye on.

There is only one 'ship left so the staff isn't going to start recruiting just anybody. We'll be following Leslie and Cothron until they commit or they're off the board, but we'll also be keeping tabs on guys like Martin and Ingram in case something out of the ordinary were to happen.

    ^ Anon,
Spreading unsubstantiated rumors is unproductive. Lo Brown is solid until he says so himself. CJ is still legitimately considering State until he commits elsewhere. Let's not fall into traps of self loathing or rumors from non-State supporters.

Anon thats not needed on this site, There are plenty of other blogs that welcome your style of commenting, but WPH isnt one of them. You are always welcome to comment if you have an opinion to add or something to get off your chest or even a fact you have heard, but not just spread malitious rumors that have no factual basis.

Do you think CJ is just hanging out with the team and on campus most weeks just because someone is making him? Joking with teammates and attending other NC State sporting events with Coach Lowe because he DOESNT like state??? Meeting up with future players like Harrow and playing ball with them all weekend long because He despises the wolfpack?? Nawww I didnt think so either....

And the comment about Brown comes out of left feild, considering his God brother and himself already are a TOP 5 RECRUITING CLASS.... I dont see him decommiting considering his FAMILY is behind State...

Keep your negative nancy opinions at home or call up your friendly Tarhole fan.... Im sure they will listen....

Whoah.....whoah Wolfies! Down fellas. It's getting hot in here! (Redfred, don't start taking off all of your clothes...) Anony MAY have been genuine in his/her comments. We have seen recruits that live in close proximity to our lovely university that liked to utilize our facilities, recruits and current players to hone their skills (on and off of the court) before moving on to other pastures. I don't take these kinds of actions as 'using NCSU' but rather using the system, as a whole. As for the Lo Brown comment...He could have heard this somewhere. I wouldn't say that this rumor has any legs, for sure. But he could have heard it from a Hole, or a senile elderly person. We just don't know. Let's put the claws away, fellas. They, too, fly in the face of the spirit of WPH's.

On a different topic, I think Sid would certainly find a way to get Leslie AND Cothron if given a chance. There are ways. Even if Thomas can play, an academic scholarship is not out of the question. Nudging someone, that will end up with little to no playing time, into transferring would be regrettable, but not unheard-of.

The class of Harrow, Brown, Leslie and Cothron would be a gigantic coup. and, to add them to Painter, Wood, Howell, Smith, CJ Williams, Mays, Vandy, etc. Come on. That class would be sick! No doubt, one for the ages!

I have to say, 2010 is going to be crazy, for both of our revenue sports, here in Raleigh. I see both of these programs rising to new heights in the next two years. Luke and CJ can climb aboard if they like. There's plenty of room on this train...right now anyway. Can you smell that? Yep. That's the smell of success. And it's within our grasp. Go Pack!

    Sorry fellas,
I didn't mean to let that be posted on here. We've been super busy today. Football presser, a few articles, and videos uploading as we speak (WolfpackPigskin.com). So I was just approving comments without reading them this afternoon. I don't usually do that but things have been so good around here that I took it for granted. Oh well.

Anyways, there is absolutely no truth to that Lo.Brown rumor at all, and State is definitely still in it for CJ. If it were my guess State will be in his final 2, but that is just a guess.

Also we appreciate everybody shutting down that sort of comment immediately and not falling into his trap of getting an argument started. This is just another example of why we feel forums will certainly work on this site. Thanks again...I've got to get back to editing and uploading.

I'm with you on the future ppack3, but I think this year will be big. Our backcourt with Javi,Julius, and CJ improving just a little and finally with a healthy Farnold will be a load. Dennis is going to be a leader and and our overall team speed and depth with guys like Davis, Thomas,Painter, and Wood will be able to give Sid a lot of options. We don't necessarily have to be the best fast breaking team to play defense all over the court.

I've read a lot of articles in magazines and other stuff. N.C. State has been picked dead last in the ACC, well I think they could be right. Truly and honestly where's the leader that with 20 seconds to go tied game. Where's the ball going to go Tracy, I do not think he will be able to make the play. It is going to be the same as last year late game situations there's no body to give the ball. Except for maybe Mays and his good shot against Miami.

How it would be nice to land both Cothron and Leslie. I agree as well if they both want to play in Raleigh a legit way will be found to get them both here. I can only imagine Brown, Harrow, Leslie, and Cothron all in the same class. First time on the site and it looks pretty good. Keep up the good work on keeping us Pack fans up to date on information.
