Red Rally Tonight 9pm at Reynolds!

At 9pm tonight, the Wolfpack basketball teams will take the floor for the "Red Rally at Reynolds" (fans must wear red to get in) to kick-off the 2009/10 season in fashion. Coach Lowe and Coach Harper will be on hand to talk to the fans about the upcoming season. Following the speeches, the teams will both take place in mini-scrimmages, three-point contests and a dunk contest. The Red Rally will give NC State basketball fans their first glimpse of freshmen Scott Wood, DeShawn Painter, Jordan Vandenberg, Richard Howell (not scheduled to dress out) and Josh Davis in the red and white. 2010 Commits Ryan Harrow, Luke Cothron and 2011 prospect Dez Wells will all be on hand to take in the event. We will also be on hand, and will be reporting back to you with video, pictures and game updates. (stay close to the basketball forum for in game updates)

Although the event will surely be a great excitement builder for the program, the real story here is that there will be donations collected to help a former Wolfpack walk-on. Brian Keeter was paralyzed from the waist down in December of 2008 when he was involved in a single car accident.

“This is a time when being a Wolfpack family is more important than it is at any other time – when we have the opportunity to come around one of our own and show support for Brian during his time of need,” said Bobby Purcell, executive director of NC State’s Wolfpack Club. “He means a lot to all of us here, and I hope that every member of the Wolfpack family will continue to keep Brian and his family in their thoughts and prayers. He’s one of us, a true Wolfpacker, and as a family, we need to be there for him."

We're on location and wanted to let you know a few things before it gets started. Recruit wise we've only seen Tashawn Mabry (2010) here so far. Kenny Inge is also in the house.

Scott Woods 3 ball gets off so quick and is so silky.

Johnny Thomas looks healthy and has hit 2 jumpers.

Painter is going to cause some serious matchup problems. You can mark that down.

Josh Davis plays so hard. He's a certain fan favorite.

Not as many turnovers as your usual red/white game and they played very up tempo.

    j.sol was in the house

i'm really liking what i saw out of vandenberg, wood, mays and williams. vandenberg was a lot more athletic than i expected him to be, he has a tremendous upside. it was cool to see mays and wood playing off each other. wood looks so poised out there, he looked like a veteran, you would've never known he was a freshman with the way he carries himself on the court.

i'm surprised josh davis wasn't in the dunk contest. i can't wait to see a dunk contest with harrow in it, haha.

Wood will set the record for free throw percentage by the time he is done. Think he shot over 90% his senior year.

Not surprised about JV. The one thing you could see from those grainy videos was him attacking the rim even on putbacks and such. Even the misses were agressive rim rattlers.

Could be the sleeping giant, did I hear about a between the legs dunk?

We really need to step it up as far as our midnight maddness or red rally. I watched midnight maddness on espnu and a lot of those places were really rockin'. The arenas were packed and they were having dance skits and all kinds of stuff. I know people will say well they are big time programs and so on but in my opinion nc state is a big time program even though we haven't had a lot of success lately. I think it would help out a lot with recruiting future players that might attend.

I'll bet CJ Leslie commits to Kentucky while he's there.

Pretty good turnout tonight. It wasn't advertised very well (big surprise) but I thought the crowd was fairly respectable.

What I saw on the court however, was SWEET! Vandenburg blew my mind! I was definitely not expecting him to come out and play as well as he did. That dunk contest wasn't actually a contest. Big J was wiping the floor with Johnny. Not to mention the way Vandenburg ran the floor. He was running as hard as he could to get on defense every possession. Its great to see new life like that from the Team. Vandenburg's hook shot was sweet too. He only took a couple; I don't remember if he made one but if he didn't he just needs a little game speed practice to get it going.

I was also especially impressed with Wood. He was money from the free throw line and was playing hard on defense. He wasn't perfect from 3-land but no one is. If he gets a streak going though, watch out! His stroke is silky smooth. I've been impressed with this kid since seeing video of this kid in the spring and he sure didn't disappoint.

Painter never really got it going from the floor but he was playing hard. Davis was in the same situation (he is also a lot bigger than I was expecting). Howell did not dress out.

Overall, the team looks like they are in better shape this year (WPH has been saying this all along). Even Sid got in on the action and lost some weight.

I'm also excited for the Ladies this year and seeing what Kellie can do! The two freshmen she brought in looked good.

I can't wait for basketball season to start! I know that's what they're saying over in Chapel Hill but I think we can do good things this season. Thinking about next years team with these young guns plus Ryan, Lo and Luke just blows my mind!

    GO PACK!

Is it just me or was it just kind of outrageous that Tia from the women's team kept trying to participate in dunk contest stuff. I mean, not to be negative, but I don't think it says she messed up. I think it says, "most women can't dunk, not even WNBA ladies" and that is TRUE. I mean that is why Candice Parker's dunks were so amazing. It wasn't because she put her arm in front of her face, it was because she could dunk the ball, AND WITH EASE. THAT is why SHE was amazing. That being said, I thought Tia was a great sport the whole night. She's definitely one of my favorite women players for STATE. Anyway, just thought it was pretty odd that they tried to include her in the dunk contest.

Richard Howell had a setback with a minor knee injury awhile back.
